Officers Taking Evans, Acufi to Serve Sentences Frank Evans, 58, and Hersel Acuff, 26, were taken to Enter prise Thursday by Wallowa coun ty officers, where they will serve jail sentences for possession of elk meat. . Attorneys for Evans claimed he was unable to stand a Jail term, but after a physical examination, Governor Meier ordered him turn ed over to the officers. The men .were convicted last year, and had no money to pay their fines of $832 each. Supreme court recently upheld the lower court In Its conviction. Bean Growers at Stayton Worried Over Wire Bugs Bean growers In the Stayton district are somewhat bothered this year by patches of wire bugs, S. H. Van Trump, county fruit inspector and horticulturist, re ported yesterday after an inspec tion, trip there. The bugs attack the rots of the bean plant and unless the plant receives much moisture and not too great sun shine, it is liable to die. Van Trump said weather this week allayed the attack of the bugs. The Stayton bean crop will be much larger than last year. Van Trump opined. Picking is about to start. The cooperative growers will do much of their canning through a deal with the West Sa lem cannery.
