Salem realtors report much In
terest among borne owners here
In the operations or the home
mortgage finance act passed by
the last congress, i Word from
Washington says an administra
tor for Oregon will be named
shortly and. he will in tarn ap
point representative In each
county in the state. !
Under the provision of the act.
the government can make loans
up to 80 per cent of the value of
property, as set by Its appraisers.
Mortgagees will take federal
bonds for their mortgage, the in
terest guaranteed at four per
cent annually by the government.
but the principal secured only by
the capital stock and the mort
gage assets of the government's
home loan refinancing bank.
Foreclosure suits are being
held back pending the operation
of the act. realtors; report, and
many distressed mortgagers hope
to be able to ease their debt bur
den thereby.
On the other hand, mortgagees
who have investigated the new
act's provisions quite generally
tell realtors they prefer to. take
their chances collecting their
mortgage at higher interest rates
or else foreclose on the property.

as a telegrapher in 1890 and for
16 years worked in that capacity
and as agent at various stations
in Oregon. Both advanced from
the ranks to gain recognition in
high traffic positions and both
are widely .known in the railroad
fraternity throughout the coun
try.
For a number of years Hin
shaw was general freight agent
for the company In Portland and
Miller was his assistant during
part of the time. In 1921 Hln
shaw was transferred .to San
Francisco as assistant freight
traffic manager and in 1923 Mil
ler was appointed general freight
agent with headquarters in Port
land. Coincident with the retirement
of Miller and Hlnshaw, E. W.
Clapp, general passenger traffic
manager at San Francisco, and
C. L. McFaul, passenger traffic
manager at Los Angeles, both of
whom are well known in Oregon,
will also retire tinder the com
pany's pension system.
A notable railroad career of
more than 46 years will close In
Portland August 1 when W. F.
Miller, general freight agent for
Southern Pacific company, re
tires on pension. At the same
time H. A. Hlnshaw, general
freight traffic manager at San
Francisco and for many years
traffic official for the railroad In
Oregon will also retire from ac
tive service.
Announcement of retirements
and assignment of important po
sitions in both the freight and
passenger traffic departments of
tne railroad was made by J. T.
Saunders, vice-p resident in
charge of system freight traffic,
and Felix S. McGinnis, vice presi
dent In charge of system passen
ger traffic.
Miller entered the service of the
southern Pacific here in 1907 af
ter previous experience with the
Missouri Pacific and Union Pact

Besides the dally routine of camp
life, each day brings a special
feature for the' girls at Camp
SanUly." In connection -with the
theme of the week:, "How to
Build a House of HappIness.T
beauty-peeking hike followed the
8unday worship service. - Monday
brought two special' events, a paper-chase
led by Eileen Moore
and. Esther Lisle, ending in a
chop suey feed and a halt hour
of star-gazing. The . costume
party, .an event of each session,
was held Tuesday night. -.
The - projects this year will
consist of camp craft under the
direction of Esther Lisle. . Camp
fire building, trail biasing, and
first aid will be taught. Stltch-
ery will take the place of sewing
and rag dogs will be made un
der the direction of Mrs. Galla
her and Gladys Taylor. Pocket
books of raffia will be made in
the handicraft classes, also un
der Mrs. Callaher and Miss Tay
lor's instructions. Classes in
swimming for beginners and in
termediates are being organised
under the direction of Ruth Ver-
teeg and Eileen Moore.
. Mrs. Claude Glenn, chairman
of the camp committee of the
T. W. C. A., Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Spears, Mrs. R Catlln, and Mr.
and Mrs. Claude Kells have been
visitors In camp. Don Douris and
Ralph Purvtne,- from . the. Boy
Scout camp, were in camp Mon
day. The entire Scout camp will
be guests of Camp Santaly Friday
evening for the weekly pageant
