M. C..A. which won permanent pos session of a silTer torphycup at the tournament in Seattle last Saturday, to compete in-the coast championship playoff to be held in Oakland, California, the latter part of May.. It is not expected that tho trip would prove costly and the northwest teams are anx ious to demonstrate the superior ity of their brand of volley , ball over that played in California. Oregon has been - represented only once In the coast finals. In 192s when, the Portland cham pions went south. The Portland team went Into the finals and lost two out of three games to San Francisco. It was the first time the northwest team had played, on the 60-foot court, now regulation in the northwest as well as in California. The captain of the Portland champions that year was Jerry Owen, now a member of the Salem sextet.- The Seattle tournament last Saturday was hard fought and the Salem team considered itself for tunate to emerge with a record of eight games won and only two lost. Portland, considered the strongest contender, haring two legs in the cup as well as Salem played Salem first and was de feated 15 8, 15 5- So demor alized was the Portland outfit that - ft finished the tournament with one win out of eight games. Salem was defeated 1$ 14 by Seattle, playing on its home court, and by Wenatchee 15 5 when Salens entered its second-string players. Wenatchee prored to be the dark horse of the tournament, participating in its first class A competition. It . previously had won the class B tournament. At a dinner following the games. Nil W. Hilburn, captain of the Salem team; was presented with - the silTer trophy cup by Frank Shea of Seattle, chairman of the Pacific Northwest Physical Education committee. , Members of th fire teams roted on an all- star Pacific Northwest team to be composed of the outstanding members of the competing sex tets.
