Shafer Estate Wound Up Ti

Francis E. Shafer was approred in
probate court Thursday, Frank E.
Shafer ai executor, tiling the final
papers. All preferred claims
against the estate hare been met
and a ratable final settlement of
7.7. per cent has been made on
the common elaims. Seventy-fire
dollars was paid to Margaret
Montgomery Shafer as settlement
of her claim against the estate and
she was granted full title to cer
tain furniture first listed In til a.
estate's assets.

Collections Fairly Good Col
lections on past due bills hare
turned upwards quite noticeably
since the end of the local bank
holidays and the time when state
warrants became cashable, local
business men report. As a class
business men are more careful
with the extension of open account
credit than three years ago and
collections are being systematical
ly pressed.

the late Harlan Carnahan who
died at 8&, has assets of S130Q,
according to a petition filed in
probate court Thursday asking the
appointment of William MeCarroll
as administrator with the will an
nexed. The court granted the peti
tion and named Frank Lynch, Carl
Nelson and Mina Ott as appraisers.
Wet Candidates File Glenn T.
Wells and Harry C. Goble, both of
Portland, filed Thursday in the
state department as delegates to
attend the proposed constitutional
convention to rote on repeal of
the ISth amendment to the fed
eral constitution. Both Wells and
Goble favor repeal of the amend
ment.
Chaiupoeg Day May 6 The an
nual meeting at Champoeg has
been set for Saturday. May 6. this
year, according to Judge P. H.
D'Arcy, for many years president
of the Champoeg association.
Programs for the annual meeting
have not yet been issue, D'Arcy
said yestarday.
Van Winkle Rales Directors
of school districts have authority
to contract with teachers so that
thay will receive a definite sal
ary, together with a bonus, pro
vided that the combined salaries
and bonus do not exceed the sal
ary budget. Attorney General Van
Winkle held in an opinion handed
down Thursday. The opinion, was
requested by V. S. Howard, dis
trict attorney of Jefferson coun
ty, and had to do with the Madras
school district. -

Considers Case Judge L. G.
Lewelling has called for briefs on
the case of Albert M. Steinbock
against Gussie Steinbock in which
plaintiff asks for custody of their
nine-year-old son, Leonard. When
the Steinboeks were divorced the
child was entrusted to the moth
er's care. She is now resisting
plaintiff's request for a change in
the court's order.

years. Then he took his master of

and entered the California school
system. Salary retrenchments have
by no means been as severe tn

according to reports reaching the
office of the county school super
intendent here. In a number of in
stances contracts have not been
agreed upon, school boards pre
ferred to await the annual budget
meeting before determining the
amount of wages to be paid teach
ers each month in 1933-1934.
