California hop news received
yesterday by H. A. Cornoyer, sec
retary of the Oregon hop growers,
iadicates a stiffening of the mar
ket there, with purchases of lit
bales of Sonomas at 27 cents,
within a halt cent of the high 28
cent mark reached last fall. Forty
three bales of Sonomas brought
25 cents, both these being the
1922 crop; and 50 bales of 1928s
sold st 20 cents.
No ssles were reported locally
yesterday, but the market is firm,
and buyers are In the field strong.
Growers win likely hold tight as
long as possible. In view of beer
legislation's bl? impetus for a
stronger msrket.
California contracts are also re
ported, with 40.000 pounds of So
nomas contracted for three years
at 21 and 20 cents; 26,000
pounds of 8acramentos for a year
at 20 cents; 50,000 pounds of Sac
raaentos for three years at 20
cents, and 60,000 pounds of Tolos
for a year st 20 cents.

There will be an advance of
10 cents per hundred pounds
in the wholesale price pn all
grades of refined sugar in Port'
land effective Tuesday morning,
Announcement to that effect was

wesk and lower. The market was
better In other parts of the coun
try.
Trading in the egg market was
a trifle easy with prices unehang
ed although showing a falr-sixed
soread. A meeting to discuss the
situation at tho headquarters of
the local co-ops was called Tues
day. The press was not lnvitea.
Very light volume of live
chickens was reaching the local
trade with a famished condition
existing. Some withdrawals from
coolers has therefore been forced.
Prices were firm.
Fair slxed sales of onions were
confirmed at Oregon sources. No.
1 stock was still 75c and sacks

ment goes from Portland to the
Orient Tuesday.
