Former President Herbert Hoo
ver started tonight for his home
in Palo Alto, Calif.
Accompanied by his son, Allan,
and Lawrence Rickey, his secre
tary, Mr. Hoover left on the
Broadway Limited of the Penn
sylvania Bystem.
The former .president, who has
been here attending to personal
business affairs since he arrived
from Washington March 4, will
stop over tomorrow in Chicago
and spend the night with friends.
Richey said Mr. Hoover would
return to New York within six
weeks to two months to wind up
his business affairs.
LONG BEACH, Cal., March 16.
(AP) Showers were added
late today to troubles of earth
quake "refugees" In Long Beach
and Compton.
More than 3000 persons, most
of whose homes were seriously
damaged in Friday's earthquake,
are still being cared for by the
Red Cross In camps in Long Beach
parks. Many thousand others have
been fed because of lack of fuel
in their homes.
As rain threatened, D. W. Pon
tius, president of the Pacific
Electric Railroad company, had
100 box ears moved Into this area
as makeshift shelter tonight for
those not accommodated by tents.
From a preliminary survey of
the entire area in which 116 lives
were lost and more than $60,'
000,000 damage done, the Red
Cross estimated today 2100 homes
were ruined and 21,000 damaged

its funds, the Red Cross is con-

First Branch Bank
Opened. Philomath
The first CTanch bank to be
recognized under the new state
law is the bank at Philomath
which opened after the holiday as
a branch of the Benton County
State bank at Corvallis. There
was previous community of inter
est, Mr. Booth being cashier of
both banks. The capital stock of
the Benton county bank was in
creased to $75,000 and its direc
torate increased with the addition
of the former directors of the
Philomath State bank.
Both banks at Corvallis, the
Benton County State and the First
National, reopened without re
striction after the holiday.

PAINT GUN BURSTS
Walter Wiemes. son of Frank
Wiemes, 1431 North Cottage
street, suffered painful but not
serious burns about the face and
neck at his home yesterday after
noon when a pressure paint spray
outfit he was using exploded and
burst into flames. He rushed
from the rear of the house, his
clothing aflame.
Persons coming to his aid
rolled him on the ground to put
out the flames. He was taken to
Salem general hospital where last
night he was reported resting
comfortably.
Considerable damage was done
to the annex to the house, where
Wiemes was refinlshlng some
furniture, firemen reported. Both
chemicals and water were re
quired to extinguish the fire.

(AP) Secretary Woodin In a
statement tonight said no restric
tions have been placed upon com
mercial transactions in silver by
the treasury department.
The secretary said there had
been a number of Inquiries asking
whether a prohibition had been
placed on silver during the bank
ing emergency. He said the only
limitations were those affecting
withdrawals for hoarding, and
the restrictions on banks not per
mitted to open.

(AP) Flames which swept
through the Western Cider and
Vinegar company's plant here to
night eaused damage estimated at
several thousand dollars to the
factory and stock. More than 30,
000, gallons of vinegar stored in
the plant were ruined, while the
entire interior of the building was
burned. A box car standing on
the siding near the building was
destroyed.
