OF FILBERTS URGE
Prospects are for Smaller
Crop This, Year, With
Higher Prices
The 1IS3 nroduetlon of fil
berts In areas of commercial im-
Sortance la Italy, Spain, and Tur
ey Is now estimated at 121, 100
teas unshelled basis. This repre
sents an exceedingly large yield
ss it is more than 60 per cent
above the four-year average pro
duction of 84.400 tons (1028-
31) and the 1931 crop of 84.000
tons.
With such a large crop, prices,
so far this season, on both shelled
and unshelled filberts, hare nec
essarily been very low. They
opened at around 45 per cent un
der last year and hare remained
at about that level up to the pres
ent time. So far during the pres
ent season, the United States has
shown no more interest than last
season. According to such fig
ures as are now available and
taking the three producing coun
tries as a unit, it appears that to
tal exports on an unshelled basis
from September to December In
clusive were about 45 per cent
shore total exports during the
corresponding period in 1981.
while this represents a sub
stantial increase, it is on the oth
er hand a little below the esti
mated increase in production. It
is therefore evident that remain
ing stocks are relatively large and
somewhat above the Quantity on
hand at this time a year ago.
With that situation, there is lit
tle likelihood of any material
change in prices, at least until
such time as something definite
can be said about 1988 prospects.
Generally, the crop following
an unusually large production Is
small. This probability is perhaps
preventing quotations from being
lower than they are at the mo
ment, as producers feel that bet
ter prices will be obtainable in
iaie spring and during the sum
mer. Along with the belief that
the 1938 production will be rel
atively short, some speculators
sre now quoting 1933 crop goods
. reiween 29 and 28 per cent
above current quotations.

Ducks in Call
PORTLAND, March (AP)
Extreme shortage of chickens
was .causing considerable worry
to receivers of lire fowls la the
local trade. During the last week
or so there has been only a nom
inal offering here. Previous to
that there were several weeks ot
short supplies as compared with
demand.
Values In the live chicken
trade were unchanged although
there was no doubt of the
strength ot the market. However.
there appears little disposition on
the part of buyers to bid higher
because of financial conditions.
Practically everything in the
chicken line was Included in the
shortage.
Ducks .were In good call for
spring stock. Late arrivals have
been scant. .
Market for country killed meats
was just about steady locally. No
price changes were shown. Re
ceipt were again practically nor
mal. Only spring lambs were now
missing.

are busy sewing grain whenever
there is a little sunshine to en

Butter Reflects
Steady Tone; Egg
Prices are Mixed
PORTLAND, March C (AP)
Market for butter reflects a
generally steady tone locally. No
price change was shown for the
day either in the cube or print
trade. Butterfat values appear
more stationary.
Prices were still rather badly
mixed in the market for eggs lo
cally, although trade leaders
both cooperative and private
were inclined to quote ont the
late advances.
