Miss Bernlce Newhouse, Eng lish teacher at the high school, told of her Impressions of the places especially associated with George Washington. Last sum mer Miss Newhouse and her par ents visited in the east and made tops at numerous points of in terest, including Washington, D. C, where preparations were being made for the Washington bicen tennial celebration; Mt. Vernon, where Martha and George Wash ington lived and are buried and where the flower gardens and rooms are kept as they were dur ing the Wasbingtons' lives; Alex andria, where the church Wash ington attended still stands and here Washington's coach is pre served ; and the site of the battle of Brandywine. Two of Washington's war camps Valley Forge and Fort Duquee were Tisited. At Valley Forge part of the original en trenchments and huts aro preserv ed and the stone house that Gen eral Washingotn had for his head quarters may be found In the vil lage. Miss Newhouse found it difficult to realize that it was pos sible for the soldiers to suffer as they did during their stay there. the student to ires err forest lands. LIBERTY, Feb. 24 Washing ton's birthday was observed at the hall Wednesday morning by the school. Several third and fourth graders put on a playlet entitled "Why George told the Truth.". Original essays dealing with the life of Washington, or the his tory of the flag were read by Ruth Salladay, Joe Williams, Helen Strohmeier, Ray Criteser and Jack Dasch; "Stars and Stripes Forever" was played by Ray Crit eser on the harmonica; a playlet, "Martha's Birthday," was another feature by the primary pupils. EAST WOODBURN, Feb. 24 An interesting program was given at the McKee school on February 22 in hondr of Washington's Dirtnaay. this program was ar ranged and carried out by the children themselves and was very well done. MINISTER'S WIFE IS H SHOWER QUEENER, Feb. 24 A short program followed by a "taffy pull" was enjoyed by several par ents at the Queener school on Washington's birthday. A debate by 7th and 8th grade students. Feb. 24 A well prepared Washington pro gram was given by the pupils of the Evergreen school Wednesday under the direction of Mardon Oveross, principal and Helen Mc Cullough, primary teacher. The program consisted of four songs by the school; recitations by Norma Finlay, Henry Pfen ning, Ernest Klopfenstein, Roset ta Hari, Miriam Gehring, Ruth Wenger, Edna ilae Roop, Lucile Lund and Kenneth Harmon; The American's Creed, by school; flag salute; stories of Washington by Elmer Klopfenstein and Billy Mc Bride; The Gettysburg Address. Robert Dlckman. A good sized crowd was present. Grades Give Program FALLS CITY, Feb. 24 The grade school presented the fol lowing program Wednesday morn ing: orchestra music; tuba solo, Frank Jones; flute solo, Erin Mc Greevy; skits by third, first and fifth grades; songs by school; American's creed by June Ryper; Minuet by Dorothy Ames and Louise Murphy with chorus of sixth and seventh graders; song, sixth and seventh graders; play, eight grade. Rev. George E. Bruce of the Dallas and local M. E. church, gave a Washington's birthday ad dress before the high school. 5TAYTON, Feb. 24. One of the largest and most enjoyable afternoon affairs of the season was the shower held at the Ever ette Downing home Wednesday afternoon, with Mrs. Downing, Mrs. W. A. Weddle and Mrs. Mar garet Schaefer as hostesses. Mrs. W. H. Lyman, wife of the minist er of the Christian church, was the guest of honor. During the afternoon, Mrs. E. R. Olds favored the group with a piano solo; Mrs. Gweneth Mielke sang two numbers and a trio, composed of Mrs. Mielke, Mrs. William Crabtree and Mrs. W. V. Adams, also sang. An or iginal poem, written by Mrs. Callie Champ, who was unable to attend was read. Those present were: Mesdames T. L. Sanders, Tom Taylor, Del Harrington, Harley Champ, Ralph Scranton, C. A. WEST STAYTON, Feb. 14 A Washington-Lincoln program was given by the school children Wednesday morning, as follows: Welcome, by Alice Dlckman: flag salute; America; "The Old Flag Forever," by Winnie Erlckson, Verna Lewis and Thelma McKlm; playlette, "Crowning Our Great Hero," by Gertrude Thomas, Una Lewis, Blanche Foster, and Eve lyn McKim; readings by Jack fiphoore, Neil Dlckman. Keith Wilkinson, Verna Lewis and Rob ert Irish; Washington playlette oy inree giria; numbers by the BRUSH CREEK, Feb. 14 Brush Creek school was filled to capacity Friday night by those who 'lammtd' in to see "George in a Jam," a three-act comedy put on by the Booster club. Brush Creek plays have always proved amusing and this one was no less so. "The funniest play yet" was the expression of many who attended. Elmer Grace was very good as "George" and John Goplerud Jr.. was no less so as his youthful guardian. Miss Inga Goplerud played the part of Miss Brown, Gray's mutinous ward. Comedy was supberb with Dan Hillman as Pop Larkins and Althea Meyers as Ma Larkins, who came to "the city," with umbrella, bird cage and all the trimmings, Mrs. Theodore Grace furnished more comedy as Odess, the color ed cook. Mrs. Hillman carried out the part of the rustle heiress very well; as did Fred Krug, his part of Jack Carson, George's bo som friend.
