To Huntington's one;
Game at 8 p. m.
Basketball teams of Salem high
and Astoria high, each built
around the remnants of the great
quintets which battled In the state
tournament finals here last
March, will clash on the Salem
high floor tonight at 8 o'clock.
Astoria has more players left i
from the 1932 state champion j
team than Salem has from the t
runner-up quintet, but both are in
the running for the state title
again, and there Is apparently lit
tle to choose between them, As
toria having won their first game
this season by two points on its
home floor.
ATerill, lanky center, seems to
fce the spark plug of this year's
Fishermen; Orwick and Mackey
are other veterans who are figur
ing in the starting lineup regular
ly. Strangely enough Canessa, the
boy who was a great "pinch hit
ter" for John Warren's Fisher
men last year, is filling the same
role again this year. In a recent
game with Corvallls, Canessa
didn't start, but scored nine
points whet he went In.
ATerill has been starting at for
ward In some of the games with
Orwick at center. Foster 3 the
other regular forward, Mackey
and Wright the starting guards.
Coach Hollis Huntington of Sa
lem high Is expected to revert to
his arrangement used prior to the
Chemawa game, with Morley or
Thomas at center, as the shift
.which placed Engle at center and
ferrlne at guard did not work
particularly well in that game.
The preliminary game tonight,
at 7 o'clock, will be between the
high school B team and Cad
well's Wranglers.

In First of Series for
State J. H. Title
Parrish was one up on Mc
Millville for the Junior high
school basketball championship
of Oregon, following an exciting
game in the Parrish gym Thurs
day night. Parrish won 34 to 22,
but there were a number of mo

closer than that and the out
come decidedly problematical. A
second pame will be played at
McMinnviile next week.
The McMinnviile boys, notice
ably sturdier than the home
squad, and with a couple of
sharpshooters in Blenkinsop and
Mabee, made it a close race In
the first half but were behind IS
to 10 at Its close.
Salstrom and Quesseth began
potting corner shots in rapid
fashion early In the second half
and they raised the margin to
22-14 In the third period. Mc
Minnviile got going in the last
quarter and cut the difference
down to six points before Parrish
started its final rally.

INDEPENDENCE, Feb. 2t.
Dallas and Falls City high school
basketball teams remained in the
running for the Polk county
championship tonight after the
second day of competition in the
county tournament here. They
will meet Friday night at 8 o'clock.
Dallas is undefeated and Falls
City has lost one game; if Dallas
wins it will be champion, if Falls
City wins another game will be
necessary.
Falls City Qualified for a sec
ond chance at Dallas by defeating
Bethel, 18 to 10 tonight, largely
through better stamina as both
teams had played in the after
noon. Bethel's play slumped no
ticeably, the players being guilty
of "traveling" many times. Falls
City led 11 to 6 at half time.
JCn the first afternoon game
Dallas defeated Bethel 30 to 26.
staving off a last period rally.
Dallas had led 11 to 5 after the
first period and 17 to 9 at half
time. Christenson of Bethel led
in the scoring with 13 points.
Falls City defeated Monmouth
18 to 15, and had the crowd on
its side due to the fighting spirit
exhibited by the boys from the
smaller town.
