CO-OP EGG FIGHT IS DIMINISHING
OUTLOOK FOR VEGETABLES DULL
Prices Being Better
Maintained, Some
Shading Noted
PORTLAND, Feb. 22. (AP)
Word was being passed in the
trade that there was less disposi
tion on the part of cooperative
egg marketers to tight In the lo
cal territory. There was an al
most general absence of price cut
ting y these interests at the
moment, due mostly to the tact
that the storage input season was
in fnll swing.
Prices were being far better
maintained by the co-ops than by
some of the private firms. Some ot
the larger operators were main
taining their prices but shading
was reported by some of the small
er ones and especially the ped
dlers.
There was no change In local
co-op prices for the day. Receipts
of eggs are showing a fractional
Increase.
Trading in th butter market
continues to reflect strength, not
only locally but along the coast
generally. Make continues to show
seasonable loss. Prices were firm
ly held at recent advances. But

Local Growers Profit

Tbe market outlook for com
mercial TereUrbles daring 19SS
appears to be eren less fsrorsble
for producers than was the situa
tion daring tbe last two years.
Under tbe conditions that nsre
de-eloped since 1129, marked by
reduced consumer baying power
and a declining- price le-el, there
has been a noticeable tendency in
the direction of Increased home
and local gardening In and around
towns, on firms, among the un
employed, and by part-time em
ployes.
Much of tra Increase la gar
dening primarily represents sus
tenance enterprises, but these op
erations hare the effect ot eren
tually expanding the proportion of
foodstuffs produced locally, thus
decreasing the outlet for supplies
that would normally more In from
distant producing areas. Transpor
tation costs remain relatirely un
changed, and as prices decline.
they take an increasingly larger
share of the market price on com
modities shipped long distances.
This reacts to the benefit ot
rrowers nearest to market, and
so long as prices and purchasing
poorr continue at tneir present
levels, the shift toward increasing
html production of food supplies,
both for home use and for local
ale, may be expected to continue.
Building Officer
Salary is Set at
$2160 by Council
The city council Monday night
set the much-disputed salary ot
the city building inspector at
flat $2160 a year upon recommen
dation of the ways and means
committee. In the city budget, the
salary was tentatiyely reduced
from $2400 plus building permit
fees up to $3000, to a flat $180
annually. Recently sereral alder
men introduced a bill to set the
salary at $2000 plus fees up to
$2100.
In addition to cutting out the
sliding scale agreement, the coun
cil eliminated the inspector's ex
pense account.
