A le rise la err prlcee at Portland cm Wednesday closed a week ot fairly steady markets, endlnc with Quo ta tlons being about le under those or a year aro. according to a weekly review issued today by the UJ3.D.A. bureau of agricultural economics cooperating with the O.S.C. extension service. Low prices hare stimulated consump tion and nave caused some receiv ers to start storage operations earlier than usual. The. latest cold spell extending over most ot the country had its effect on the egg market this past week, as eastern markets advanc ed sharply on mixed color ergs from the middle west and gained cent on Pacific coast eggs. March futures at Chicago are not quite a cent below a year ago. Season Increases In production la California about balanced de creases in Oregon and Washing ton, so that the total continued irregular but about 1 per cent under a year ago. Fewer eggs be ing saved for hatching has tend ed to keep market supplies rela tively large. Storage supplies for the country are at the low ebb of 1402 cases, about halt the total a year ago and some 500 cases be low the five-year average tor this date. LIVE CHICKENS IN PORTLAND, Feb. IS (AP) Another spurt of demand was re flected for live chickens today with very limited offerings since killers slapped the price so hard. All sorts were now being sought. Slightly better trading tone was suggested for country killed hogs with prices steady to He lb. better in spots. Lambs were hold ing steady with sales mostly 11 12c for good stuff. There was a rumor in the trade of the formation of another low priced onion pool to be offered soon at Brooks. Since the last one there has been practically no de mand at the source and little at consuming points. BUT HARDEN LATER NEW YORK, Feb. 18 (AP) Stocks were reactionary again to day, though the tone hardened a bit toward the close. Net changes, however, averaged into a larger loss than yesterday's and volume increased moderately. With rails weakening and a few industrials troubled by adverse dividend actios, speculative sen timent continued flabby. Wall street was cheered by the prog ress made in working out Mich igan's banking difficulty, but knew a substantial currency cir culation rise had occurred inci dent to the flow of cash into that state. The federal reserve bank entered the money market, which had tinned slightly, cutting its bill buying rate and purchasing government securities. Utilities were steadier, on the whole, than yesterday. Consoli dated Gaa profited by short cov ering, but sagged later, American Telephone held rather stubborn ly, though Public Service of New Jersey and Peoples Gas lost S and North American almost a point. MART HI Extras Held Down by Southern Buyers; Eggs Unchanged PORTIJLND. Feb. It. (AP) All hntter prlcee except extras were advanced In the cube trade during the late session ot the produce exchange. It waa another backup for the manipulators who have been tiring to hold down prices here to conform to their California sales. The lack of advance In the price of extras was due to the fact that California was unwilling to par more. The differential between extras and other grades was there fore lessened with a rise of lc in firsts and Vic pound in standards and prime firsts. Make of butter continues to show a rery small churning at Pacific northwest points. There was no surplus and shipments te California were being made in face of the shortage here. There was no open change ia egg market prices here for the day. Receipts were smaller bat demand was not any too brisk. There appeared sufficient for needs and secret price rebates continue.
