EXPORT OF ALFALFA
SEED SETS RECORD
Argentine Flaxseed Yield
Is low; Range Assured
For Stock men
CORVALLIS. Or.e., Feb. 1.
(AP) Heavy exports of alfalfa
sa4 with some price advances, a
reduced flaxseed crop In Argen
tine, and improved weather con
ditions la some sections for crop
and livestock men are reported
today In a miscellaneous market
reylew by the TJ. 3. D. A. bureau
of agricultural economics cooper
ating with the O. S. C. extension
service.
Exports of alfalfa seed have
reached record proportions since
the failure of the seed crops In
France and Italy. For the calen
dar year just closed the exports
amounted to 1.564.641 pounds
compared with the five-year ave--rage
of only 8 10,4 4 S pounds. Of
ferings from Kansas and Oklaho
ma have about ceased and some
advances in price have been
noted.
Both yield and quality ot the
Argentine flaxseed crop are low
this year. The first official esti
mates ot production indicated a
crop ot about S3 million bushels,
alch la somewhat lower than
previous trade estimates. This la
the smallest crop since 1929 and
only about CO per cent of the
1931 production.
Favorable weather continued
over most of the winter grain
area this past week though snow
protection is still lacking in most
sections. Generous rains in Call
fornia and Arizona where mois
ture was badly needed was the
outstanding development west of
the Rockies. Stock men are in
better spirits as range is assured.
though for the time being winter
ranges are snow covered and some
stock are suffering from lack ot
feed. Unreasonable cold and
heavy frosts are bothering grow
era in the southern part ot Cal
lfornia.
Onion Sets are
Scarce; Chicken
Supply Growing
PORTLAND. Feb. 1. (AP)
Increase in the live chicken sup
ply was so generally expected to
day that most kiVers were quot
ing the low bur.? price estab
lished yesterday. The movement
however was surprising inasmuch
as fully half of it consists ot heavy
hens.
While the usual first of the
month dullness was suggested in
country killed meats during the
day, top quality lambs were in
very liberal call with prices main
talned. Only medium cows were
really weak.
There was a real scarcity ot
onion seta. Local prices were firm
er to higher and generally no low
er than 7c pound even In large
lots. Demand was already appear
Ing.

is described the bachelor's home
stead adjoining A. F.'s brother
Henry's place, with a one room
house built of fir poles; no cell

over the head of the bed to get
air. This was the first home ot
the A. F. Browns in Oregoa. He
was homesick; wished himself
back at Saratoga Springs; but
Mrs. Brown had regained her
health and so liked Oregon, and
was never homesick. A good crop
was raised, mostly oats, but prices
were down, oats 26c a bushel, and
the year's profits were about $25.
