CHS FRIDAY
ID SATURDAY
Annual Series Expected to
Be Warmly Contested;
Visitors Strong
Scraping together by various
means the cash necessary beyond
the goarantee offered by the local
school to finance the. trip, the
Medford Junior high school bas
ketball squad will arrive in Salem
Friday for a two-game series with
Parrish Junior high. Such a series
has become an annual event and
the games hare always been close,
Parrish holding a slight edge on
victories to date.
The situation in southern Ore
gon is similar to that here; there
are not enough Junior highs with
in easy traveling distance to pro
vide each other with a full season
schedule of competition, and the
junior high hoopsters play in the
county B league. Medford junior
high has won six out of eight
games in this class. Parrish has
lost only one game, a non-conference
clash with Mill City.
Coach Ray Henderson of Med
ford has announced that his start
ing lineup probably will include
Coats nd Lindley, forwards; Van
Dyke, center; Hicks and Dickin
son, guards. Van Dyke is rela
tive of Frank Van Dyke, recently
a law. student at Willamette uni
versity. The Parrish squad has been
strengthened by the addition of
several players who were not eli
gible the first semester, and on
this account Coach Frank Brown
Is not yet ready to announce his
lineup.
The first game with Medford,
Friday night on the Parrish floor,
will be preceded by a preliminary
game at 7 o'clock, in which the
Parrish Trojans will participate.
There will be only one game Sat
urday night and It will start at
7:10.

Giants Sign Up

NEW YORK, Feb. 1 (AP)
The New York Giants today add
ed three more signed contracts to
the list for a total of 21 accepted.
The latest are Gilbert English,
young lntlelder who may give
Johnny Vergez a race for the
third base Job; Arthur McLarney,
University of Washington product
who is also an infield prospect:

By BRIAN BELL
HOLLYWOOD, Cal., Feb. 1.
()AP) Bobby Jones had Just
finished an effortless round of
golf over a hard Hollywood
course, shaving a stroke from par
and exhibiting a beautiful putting
stroke. The champion of cham
pions in the past has been known
to encounter trouble putting In
California.
As he holed out his last par,
sending his approach putt dead
from 25 feet, friends suggested
he was in the midst of a good
putting stride.
"I putted well enough today,"
he said, 'but I might not do so
well next time. It's easy to miss
putts. Why, they tell me, a good
golfer took four putts in the
tournament the other day with
the eight inch cups.
'For that matter, I once putted
off the green and into a stream
after reaching the putting surface
from the tee."
His hearers were incredulous.
"When?"
"Oh, about 16 years ago. I was
playing a practice round before
the 1916 amateur at Merlon, the
first X entered. The greens were
very keen, quite different from the
heavy Bermuda greens In the
south, the only ones I bad ever
seen.
"At the sixth hole, a pitch
across a brook, I was 30 feet be
yond the hole with my tee shot.
I hit the putt as 1 would have
stroked it at home and was amaz
ed to see my ball roll on past the
hole and into the stream. Imagine
my embarrassment when I had to
play four from the other side of
the water."
The only man who ever won all
the championships in sight In one
year does not believe any radical
changes will be made in golf.
"If a pretty good game now
and I believe it will be left alone.
I shall be very much surprised If
the size of the eup is increased,
As for the lack of thrills, there
may not be many for the crowds
watching the stars as Gene (Sara
sen) says, but there are often a
lot of them In a round in which
the scores are from 95 to 100."
This seemed almost a reference
to the ability of the reporter so
the subject was hurriedly changed
from golf to bridge.

CRUCIAL COAST'
SERIES LOOMS
Oregon State Heading for
Seattle; Gill Works
On his Offense
OREGON STATE COLLEGE.
Corvallls. Feb. 1. Halfway
through its conference basketball
schedule, Oregon State college
basketball team will Journey to
Seattle this week end where It
will meet University of Washing
ton, conference leader, Friday and
Saturday nights. In a two-game
series which promises to be the
deciding set-to of the season.
Now resting In third place on
the conference ladder, with five
wins and three losses, the Orange
men must at least split the two-
game series with the Huskies to
stay In the running for the
crown and two wins are nearly
necessary to substantiate any
championship winning aspirations
the Orangemen might have. In the
two-game series between the
teams at Corvallls last week, Ore
gon State won the first decisively
and dropped the second by a nar
row margin.
Washington Huskies now ia
first place with five wins and only
one loss, look like they are head
ing for their sixth consecutive
championship. Oregon State, gen
erally rated as the most feared
team in the conference, has been
coming fast so far this season but
must overpower the Huskies to
establish Itself as a strong cham
pionship contender.
Lewis and O'Connell
Carrying Big Load
Amory T. "Slats" Gill, Orange
coach, has spent the greater part
of this week perfecting his of
fense. Gill is faced with a large
offensive problem in that Captain
Ed Lewis, lanky all-star Orange
center and conference leading
scorer, and Skeet O'Connell,
flashy forward, considered the
fastest man in the conference, are
carrying nearly the entire Orange
offensive burden. These two men
have scored more than half the
points garnered by the entire Or
ange squad this season.
While the Orange varsity hi
battling for the conference lead
in Seattle, Oregon State fresh
man basketball team will meet
University of Oregon frosh quin
tet In the first two games of their
tour-gams traditional little "civil
war series playing at CorvaUis
Friday night and at Eugene Sat
urday sight.
Oregon Stats rooks bave not
been defeated this season, having
npset CorvaUis high school twice.
Willamette freshmen twice, and
Lincoln and Commerce higa
schools of Portland once.
Roy Lamb, rook coach, bas
built bis quintet around Lefty
Palmberg and Bob Bergstrom,
former all-state prep stars from
Astoria. Both men show promise
of-being two of the flashiest ball
players to be seen here in some
time.

Some pretty good high school
basketball players graduated
last spring, aad some of the
best of them are playing on
the first year teams at the big
state schools. The Frosh and
the Rooks will start their an
nual series this weekend. Fri
day might at Corvallls and Sat
urday night at Eugene. Salem
fans who hope to peek, at the
box scores and. find out what
Glenn Sanford does in those
games wilL however, be disap
pointed. Glenn is hobbling I
rouna wiin an lniectea root
and Is not slated to play either
night.
Most coaches announce "shake-
up" plans when their teams lose
several games in a row, but Bill
Reinhart's Webfeet have lost
eight in a row and he isn't plan
ning anything of the kind. Bill
says his boys have been giving
their best and Just aren't as good
as their opponents. Gregory of
the Oregonlan opined the other
day that the, Oregon basketball
was 'lily white" on the proselyt
ing question, and asked the fans
how they liked It. High Climber
of Eugene says that's the truth:
there aren't even any honest Jobs
for basketball players. Meanwhile
a Corvallls editor thinks In view
of the Webfoot downfall this sea
son. Billy ought to quit writing
articles on "how to play basket
ball."
The dope we hear is that
Billy hasn't any basketball
players worth, mentioning, for
the sufficient reason that Doc
Spears grabbed all the scholar
ships and all the good Jobs
for football men while he was
at Eugene, and the basketball
department didn't have any
thing to offer.
The Chemawa Indians will play
Medford high at Medford Friday
and Saturday, and then we'll
have some idea how southern
Oregon teams stack up against
the north end of the state. But we
haven't much doubt that Medford
at least, will stack up quite high
The wise ones in Portland
have Jefferson high picked as
the champion this hoop
but there, has been n slight
slip-up.. The Jeffs dropped one

are coached by "wee Dave
Wright, formerly of Dallas. Xe
matter what sort of material
he has, Dave always has a well
coached bunch w ho know what
it is all about.
BULLDOGS TO MEET

comes here Friday night to meet
the Bulldogs is the high school

took Woodburn in the first meet

23 to 18. However, things have
brightened up considerably slnee
that time, and Woodburn athletio
fans look for a Bulldog victory
Friday night.
Sin ram and Oberst. both inelig
ible the first part of the year, sre
now in the good graces of the
Powers that be, and will probably
start Friday's game. Oberst will
play a guard 'position, teaming
with Halter. Kraus and Slnram
will be forwards, and Jackson will
fill the pivot position.
Two games, for both A and B
teams, will be played. The first
