NEW YORK, Jan-14. (AP)
Stocks dawdled today and bonds
were indifferent, but the finan
cial community found Its atten
tion diverted from dull security
markets by happenings off the
stock exchange.
Sterling lumped more than
three cents to the best quotation
since last October and silver fu
tures became the medium, for a
time, of excited speculation. Spot
silver rose cent to 23.
Irregular stock changes by the
close averaged into another small
net loss, so that the market's
drift was still downward. Weak
ness appeared in a few Issues
notably National Biscuit, which
tumbled i points. Earnings for
1132 were somewhat under the
annual rate. U. S. Steel preferred
bogged down a bit.
Fractional net loses were listed
for New York Central, Pennsyl
ranla, American Can, Allied
Chemical. Du Pont, General
Motors, Loew's, Woolworth, Mont
romery Ward and North Ameri
can. Minor Gains were recorded
by Weetinghouse. American Tele
phone, Corn Products and Pacine
Gas.
Total sales were only 41 1,101
shares, with one exception, the
year's smallest Volume.

"While there were no further
open prke changes tor -the day
here, nines showed a spread or.
3e for similar grades with the
highest figures generally suggest
ed by the local co-ops.
With receipts increasing some
what and with the local make at
least holding its own. an easier
feeling was apparent la the mar
ket for butter locally with ship
ping call decreasing.
Even though some of the cash
buyers of chickens here reduced
the bids on medium and heavy
W6sit hens, all sorts are finding
ftvor at full prices. There was
aa especial scarcity of broilers.
There is a better feeling all
through the market for country
killed lamb. Tops are easily mov
ed around lie while there is now
a very good call for even the poor
er sorts and fer mutton.
There was a real sign of early
spring in the announcement of
the initial offering of the season
of onion sets. The price was
placed at 5e lb.
