tion was Introduced in the senate
by the resolutions committee and
was passed unanimously.

tobacco tax bill designed to
raise at least 1200.000 annually
in revenue for the state, was in
troduced in the house Thursday
I morning by Representative Frank
Hilton of Portland.
The bill would place a fire-
cent tax on each package of 10
cigarettes sold and a 10 per cent
tax on the wholesale price of all
other tobacco products sold in
the state. In addition each to
bacco dealer would pay a IS an
nual license fee and each whole
saler of tobacco would pay a $10
annual license fee.
The bill was passed through
second reading and referred to
committee.

trict embracing the northern part
of Wasco county were filed Ja the
offices of the state hydro-electric
commission Thursday.
t The proposed district has an
area of approximately iOt square
miles. It Is bounded on the east
by the Deeehutee river and. ea the
north by the Columbia river. The
district would inflade the city of
The Dalles, and the towns of lio
sier and Dufur. Unincorporated
communities would include Big
Eddy, Celilo, Boyd and Friend.
The proposed district is being
sponsored by the Wasco county
Pomona grange. No. 11. Petitions
were presented by F. M. Gill, com
mittee chairman.
' The purpose of the district Is
to develop approximately 10,000
horsepower at If oddy, Ock.it, Rec
lamation or Slmonax power sites
on the Deschutes river at a cost
of $1,000,000 tor plant and f 400,
000 for distribution system. The
assessed value of the proposed dis
trict was estimated at 14.TC0
000. It would be known as the
northern Wasco county utility
district.
The petltlona Thursday were re
ferred to the attorney general,
and If found to be satisfactory,
the hydro - electric commission
will hold a publie hearing to make
a preliminary Investigation of the
project not less than SO days or

pleted petitions are filed.
