Dec (AP) Financial markets bade an uncere monious goodbye to It XX today. Enough stocks took a last min ute drop to make the closing aver age slightly lower, bat many less active shares were higher, in soma eases sharply so, dne to late mark-ups. Issues off a point or thereabouts were American Telephone, Ameri can Can Consolidated Gas, U. 8. Steel Preferred, Corn Products, R. J. Reynolds 'B, Santa Fe, Union Pacific and Lackawanna for American Tobacco "B," Liggett ft Myers "B." In Standard Oil of New Jersey and National Biscuit the decline averaged half a point. Volume reached 52C.7T3 shares. Appraisals of the current tinan clal position brought rarious opin ions; but the consensus seemed to be that in some respects, at least. the year bad ended more satisfac torily than it began. It was point ed out that the final six months of 19XX had witnessed a slacken ing of deflation, a tendency to level off, even though recurrent weakness ot commodity prices seemed discouraging. Stocks finished closer to the year's lows thaa to the highs. though the difference was small. Highest grade bonds, howeyer. hare been making new tops in the past month or so, a constructive development especially since even best 'ratings in the investment market had previously displsyed a distinct Inclination to follow stocks. 246 A timber and wood land, good country road through place. His prop erty was at Commercial and Fir. east side of Commercial, but Fir street, showing on original plats, was never opened, and does not now exist. There was a lawsuit in volving rights there, on account of the fact that the street was never opened, in the trial of which R. P. Boise recalls that he was a witness, also C. L. Parmenter. The DuVoisan property was, Jan. 31, 1874. mortgaged by Du Voisan to John G. Wright, and ti tle some years later went to Ben jamin Forstner. old time Saleai gunsmith and capitalist, waa cam to Oregon with the Aurora colony people in the fifties. Forst ner erected a large residence, m late years occupied by several prominent people, including tao Emmons family, and just now va cant. The number of the house is S88 North Commercial street. S S DuVoisan at fir3t built for Lira self a very small Ehaek near the bank of Mill creek. He later had erected a better houe, of lumber, frouting near Commercial street; but the new one was also eMail and unpretentious. DECEMBER 81 (Copyright. lt3S. Standard Statistics Co.) (Continued from page 4) feel as If he had swallowed a Pa per or two of orerly-heated Pins But generally speaking, not so bad, not so bad. When the devil was sick the derll a saint was he; when the devil was well the devil a saint was he. FaTortte quotation of a certain citizen of Salem. Everybody knows s good pic ture or a good book, and the fact that everybody doesn't agree with ererybody in such matters makes nor a whit of difference. There is not. I think, any read ing to compare with the well written story of the life of a man or a woman who has accomplish ed, against odds, something for the betterment of mankind. And the greater the odds, the keener the interest. He lived entirely alone; called on no one, and no one called on him. He wa3 a recluse. But he was often seen on the business streets and he was never known to ap pear up town without a silk hat called In those days a "stove pipe hat" and with a swallow tailed coat of once fashionable cut, and an elegant cane. His man ners comported with his faultless apparel; he was always a gentle man; polite to the nth degree, af fable, compalonable. S 'a V As he grew old he took on fleh; b3came fat. This explains the fact that It was an easy thing for the youngsters of the town to 'jal his grapes he could not run after them and give them the treatment they had coming, as any one of them now living will freely admit. Besides, away down In his ht-art, the kindly old man perhaps did not begrudge any of them the grapes, within reason. But Judge McMahan avers that most of the boys with his gang took more than they nteded. They were like the colored boy with the large water melon, who was admonished that he had too big a melon for such a little aigger, and who replied: "Dar's no sich thing as too much watermelon, but mebbe dey is slch a thing as not enough nig ger, howsumever I ain't it." S How did "French Louie" live? It was understood that he had failed in business la New York, and had scanty means when be came to Salem, but that for years regular remittances came from a sister la France. (Continued on Tuesday.)
