Ore., Dec. 31 (AP) A stagnate aaplo trada during tha past week was a chief factor in soiling down fruit and vegetable shipments from the northwest to a new seasonal low level despite a gain in potato ship ments over the previous week, it was stated today in a review is sued by the U. 3. D. A. bureau of agricaltural economics cooperat ing with the O. S. C. extension service. Apple markets are most dis couraging with slow demand at prices barely equal to . packing costs. Early varieties such as Jon athan and Delicious are deterior ating in common storage as the season advances. Delicious are held in unusually large volume because of heavy production, with only ordinary market movement to date. Apple prices have steadily de clined since the first of the sea son, early sales showing the best returns. Shippers and growers are both resisting further decline In values. Improvement Is looked for with the turn of the year when Great Britain is expected to have ex hausted Canadian supplies and will turn to the states for apples for February delivery. Best do mestic markets at present are in the gulf states. Pear markets are in much the same condition, with Boscs sell ing in the east at less than trans portation costs in some instancea right at the height of the normal Bosc selling season. D'anjous are down a dollar or less per box F. O. B. shipping points. Potato shipping point markets were firm to slightly stronger dur ing the week with loadings mostly from storage in the northwest where the weather waa unfavor able for movement from farm storage. It is a long road and a fairly expensive one, however, from raw land to a 12-year-old bearing wal nut orchard, points out A. S. Bar rier, farm management specialist at Oregon State college who is con ducting in cooperation with fed eral department of agriculture an economic study of walnut grow ing, started at the request of the organized growers. To bring an orchard to profit able bearing, which is ordinarily 12 years of age, costs a total of IS41 per acre, according to rec ords obtained from 41 growers. Of this amount $151 per acre la the first cost of land suited to walnut growing, $4 8 is the cost of planting and the first year's op erations, and $14.19 per acre Is the annual cost thereafter, grant ing that other crops are grown between the trees to cut down tha cost. All of this is not cash cost, of course, particularly In the case of an orchard grown on a general farm. The average cash outlay for growing costs was found to be $75 per acre, mostly accounted for in trees, taxes and hired labor. A preliminary report of the study is available free In mimeographed form.
