Many family reunions are being: plan ned for the Christmas season and students are returning to their homes here lor the holidays. Among those who hare arrived home during the past Yoet end are Milicent Olin, Rose Smith, Marjorie Sumpter and Marian Al len from the University of Ore gon; Mary Holthouse from Ore gon State; Florence Root, Meldon Raines and Lois Lovett from western state normal at Mon mouth; Marine Jewett from Wil lamette; and Bob Allen from Hill Military. Miss Lulubel Dunivan arrived In Mill City the last of the week from- San Francisco to spend the holidays at the home of her fath er, E. Dunivan, and her brother, Lloyd Dunivan. Miss Dunivan Is a nurse In the university hospital In San Francisco. Postmaster and Mrs. W. O Smith are making plans for a family reunion at their home on Christmas day. Among those ex pected to he present are Mr. and Mrs. Harry Patton and family of Portland, and the Merle Smith and Q. Wassam families of Sa lem. Mrs. Wassam and Mrs. Pat- ton and Merle Smith a son of the Mill City Saithi. Miss Gweneth Dike will arrive this week from Oregon City where she is teaching this year for a visit -with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy E. Dike, and MIes Janice Dunivan will also be home from Silverton in which city she la teaching. $27 Contributed To RedOoss Sum By St. Paul Folks ST. PAUL. Dec. 21. St. Paul people contributed $27 to th Rod Cross drive. This drive was made by Mrs. E. C. Davidson accompaa led by Mrs. Claude Smith and Mrs. Jessie Managre. A "500" card party was held Sunday night at the Knight of Columbus hall. Mrs. George Hiilur won the women's first prize and Miss Marie Kirsch second. The men's first prize was won by Maurice Smith and second by Jack Coleman. The next card party will be held Sunday, January 1. Bartels Removed to Home; Recovery Slow MACLEAY, Dec. 21. Irvile Bartels who was severely burned with gasoline seven weeks ago was removed from the Willamette sanitarium to his home Sunday. At the next meeting of the Morning Star grange, Christmas eve, each person attending will brine a 10-cent present wrapped for the tree exchange. Candy, nuts, popcorn balls and other Christmas treats will be served af ter the Christmas program put on during the lecturer s hour. Mrs. E. A. Chambers of the Dover district has received word from Minnesota of the death of her mother, Mrs. Aldrloh, who had been feeble for several years. Mrs. Chambers spent the summer with her mother a year ago. Mrs. Addle Hutchinson who has been staying with her daughter, Mrs. J. O. Van Winkle, for sev eral months, left for Bremerton, Wash., Sunday where she will 1 spend the winter with her son. j Roy Hutchinson and family. Mrs. j van Winkle accompanied ner to Bremerton. Kay Brown's hobby is collecting teeth those that chewed many years ago when dentists were unknown in California. She is assistant to Ralph Clidden, of Los Angeles, who has been digging into the graves of Channel Indians in Southern California. Out of 85,000 teeth, only 12 with cavities were found. Installation Plan For Monday Night Of Eastern Star MILL CITY, Dec. 21. Plans are rapidly nearing completion for the annual banquet and installa tion of officers of Marilyn Chap ter No. 145, order of Eastern Star, to be held the night of December 26. At that time a number of grand lodge officers are to be present. Miss Daisy Hendrieson will be inducted Into the office of worthy matron and Wilbur Chesnut into the office of worthy patron. Frees Uprooted in Zena Area by Gale And Hinder Lights : :.A, Dec. 21. The terrlflo gale of Sunday night uprooted trees, tore off big branches in the woods while the roads In the ad jacent districts of Zena, Lincoln and Brush College were strewn with debris. Homes supplied with electric ity from the Salem power plant were without lights from 11:10 until 1 o'clock Sunday night. Sev eral telephone poles were blown down but the telephone service was not seriously Impaired at last reports Monday morning. Cold Weather Breaks For Valsetz Section Apparently satisfied with the scare he threw into the assembled member of the House of Representatives, Marlin Kemmerer, of Allentown, Pa is shown after his arrest with the man who averted a panic and, maybe, a tragedy. Kemmerer "held up" Congress with a pistol while he demanded that he be given the floor m order to make n speech. While members scurried for safety, the youth was approached by Representative Maas, of Minnesota, who quietly disarmed hhn. Rep. Maas is shown above hold ing the weapon he took from Kemmerer. Two sticks of dynamite were later found in the man's Washington lodgings. VALSETZ, Dec. 21. The cold weather has broken in and around this vicinity and once more there is a good Oregon rain. Two large trees sawed out of the mountain road to rails City last week and the rosd was then passable while the ground was froien. Hiltibrands Leave To Spend Holidays And Others Going INDEPENDENCE, Dec. 31. Among the people leaving town for the Christmas holidays are Mr. and Mrs. Olen Hiltibrand, who will spend the holidays In Holly wood, Cal., visiting their daugh ter, Glenna, who Is attending the University of California. They will also visit with Mrs. Moser, Mrs. Hiltibrand's sister. Mrs. Hazel Stalsbery will spend the vacation at her home In Eu gene. She Is English teacher at the high school. 'Mr. and Mrs. Lex Wheeler will spend the vaca tion at the homo of Mrs. Wheel-' er's parents in Roseburg. Due to illness Mr. and Mrs. Loren Mort and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Robinson will not leave town until the first of next week. The Morts will visit in Washington and the Robinsons at Mapleton. the result of action taken by the cltv commission here last month. No salaries below $100 a month wer cut. The largest reduction was in City Manager Garrett's sal ary, from $500 a month to $325. Bethel Christmas Entertainment to Be Thursday Night SCOTT8 MILLS, Dec. 21. H. Macy Js teaching the intermediate room at Scotts Mills school for Miss Arelen Athey, who Is in. Mrs. Bethel Taylor, principal, was also unable to teach the first of the week. Miss Wagtnl and Mr. Wynd, high school teachers, con ducted her classes. Miss Cleo Sauersslg and Averitt Dunagan, both students at Oregon State college, are homo for the Christmas vacation. Franklin Shepherd Saturday lost a cow that had been sick a few days.v Gerard Plas also lost a cow Monday night; his cow choked on a potato. A triple basketball game was played here Friday night: Colton town team vs. Scotts Mills town; Colton High school boys vs. Scotts Mill high school boys, and Colton high school girls vs. Scotts Mills high school girls. Colton won the town team and girls' games, and Scotts Mills the high school boys' game. Rickreall Schools Closed for 15-Day Rest; Reopen 3rd RICKREALL. Dec. 31. Rick reall schools are closed for a two weeks vacation to reopen again on January 3. The high school stu dents and faculty enjoyed a Christmas dinner Friday noon at school. This dinner has become an annual affair. A Christmas tree and party followed during the afternoon. Each room of the grade school had its tree with a Christmas treat and exchange of gifts. Thursday night the grade school put on splendid program before a Urge group or parents ana friends. Two numbers by the school orchestra and a number by the harmonica band were greatly enjoyed, as was an amusing skit bv the primary children and a pageant by the upper grades. 1 - .
