EXTREMELY QUIET
Dried prune markets are ex
tremely Quiet in all northwestern
districts during early December.
Some limited volume of sales to
both foreign and domestic outlets
has continued during the entire
season, but packers hare mostly
been able to fulfill these transac
tions from stocks purchased earl
ier in the season. Export Inquiry
is at a standstill, awaiting- the
outcome of international debt
agreements, which are expected to
be settled in mid-December. Little
export business is anticipated un
til January.
Some confidence in the future
of the prune export deal is reflect
ed in a few speculative purchases
by New York Interests during the
past three or four weeks, accord
ing to northwestern packers.
Packers continue to operate on ex
tremely small margins, with a
spread between growers' sales and
packers' sales of about 1 cent per
pound.
Probably the outstanding fea
ture of the deal at present is the
great scarcity of 40-50 sizes, and
the relative abundance of stook
sizing 25-40. As a result, 40-50
quotations are discounted very
slightly below 30-40s.
Growers sold in limited volume
In all northwestern districts last
week at the following values: 30
35s. 3c; 85-408, 2 3 -4c; 40-45s,
2 Ho; 45-50s, 2 c.
Packers' sales, in 25-lb. boxes,
f.o.b. Portland docks were as fol
lows: 20-308. 5 3-4 to Sc; 2 5-3 6s.
4 3-4 to 5c, some asking 5 1-4;
30-40s, 3 3-4 to 4c. few 4 1-4:
40-50s, 3 l-2c. Some packers en
tirely sold out of 40-SOs.

Latest word from continental
Europe on the hop situation there
Indicates a strong tendency pre
vailing; tn Germany, for Instance,
It la said there la not more than
1,500 cwt. remaining In.- growers
hands, with practically no sellers
at present.
Spalts and Tettnags have almost
entirely disappeared. The narrow
markets in Germany, France and
Jugoslavia led to a concentration
of the demand In Czechoslovakia
and Poland, with the last named
country having been cleared of
hops at advancing prices. In Cze
choslovakia, buying has been
strong and led to a reduction of
open stocks to about 10.000 owls,
at present. At present, the quan
tities remaining unsold In Central
Europe are estimated not to ex
ceed 15,000 cwts. Much of these
stocks consist of middle to Infer
ior qualities. The demand for
choice qualities has led to rising
prices In the 8aaa district which
as of Nov. 22, ranged from 700
to 1200 Ke. equal to $20.77 to
$35.81 per 50 kilos, or 110 lbs.
Quotations la the Nurnberg mar

follows: The Hops Marketing
Board announces price advance,

2. Until that date present prices
will be maintained. Commercial
estimates Indicate 70 per rent of
the 1932 crop has already been
disposed of. Imports for the laat
three months show a decided de
crease. Imported stocks are low
and little business being done on
account of the large margin be

CORVALLI3, floe. $...(AP)
A downward trend in egg prices
and a somewhat uncertain tone of
the turkey trade were reported to
day In the weekly review of egg
and poultry markets by the U. 8.
D. A. bureau of agricultural econ
omics cooperating with the O. 8.
C. extension service. Liberal pro
duction, weakness in eastern mar
kets and curtailment of demand
by recent price rises were leading
factors in the decline in the coast
egg situation.
Egg production on the coast has
increased this fall at a more rapid
rate than a year ago. while the
mixed color eggs of the middle
west have about reached the sea
sonal low point in production,
causing the white eggs in the east
to suffer a larger share of the
price drop. Carlot shipments from
the west increased 10 per cent to
114 cars laat week, which was 30
per cent above a year ago.
Turkey shipping districts are
now loading for the Christmas
markets with Indication that the
deal for this season will be some
what larger than a year ago, un
less producers refuse to sell, and
hold for the post holiday trade.
Marketings for the Thanksgiving
trade were not relatively heavy,
considering the size of the crop.
Storage and import figares for
November are not yet available,
but indications are that both will
show totals far below a year ago,
materially offsetting the effect of
the 13 per cent larger estimated
domestic production this season.

For the second time this week

fVt gains on the whole were

STEJIDY PAST WEEK
CORVALLIS, Dec. 9. ( AP)
Oregon hop markets remained
steady during the past week with
trading about at a standstill, .ts
growera were not Inclined to pell
at present quotations while deal
ers were reluctant to advance
their bids pending further mar
ket and executive developments, it
Is stated la yesterday's weekly re
view by the U. S. D. A. bureau ot
agricultural economics, cooperat
ing with the O. S. C. extension
service. Prevailing quotations are
still 28 cents net to growers.
Previous high marks were ex
ceeded in Washington and Calif
ornia, when sales were made as
high as 27 cents per pound,
though there, as in Oregon, there)
is little disposition to trade just
at this time. In all these sections
the comparatively light remaining
stocks In first hands are held by
those capable of holding for tnr
ther market developments, anrtla
most cases they are asking Ist r
eral cents above present market
prices when willing to place ; ny
definite price at all.
IDE
PORTLAND, Dec. t (AP)
Demoralization of egg prices at
Portland by outsiders is by no
means a new conditioa in the lo
cal trade but the present situa
tion appears the worst known
here, considering the season, the
Journal said today.
Irrespective of what price local
co-ops and private operators name
on eggs, some of the outsiders
quote from 1 to 2c less la order
to retain a trade that purchases
only on price. Naturally such con
dition tends to create an atmos
phere of weaknesa here.
There was no further open price
change for the day in the local
egg market although a further
slight recession was noted In New
York. Lay here continues to In
crease and with demoralised trade
conditions, the country appears
willing to sell below established
values, which does the market
nothing but harm.
