S Thus concluded the valuable and interesting historical sketch of Judge Boise. He often told ot his first visit to the home of Rev, O. Dickinson in Salem. As related m his address, he came to Salem on his first visit, la 1852, on horseback, in company with U. 3 Judge (territorial judge) Matthew Deady, to hold court here. Mr. Boise, newly arrived ta the terri tory, was acting as prosecuting attorney, by appointment of Judge Deady. Is The judge and his acting pros ecuting attorney put up at the ho tel of E. N. Cooke, afterward named the Mansion house, north west corner of Liberty aad Divi sion streets. (The old Mansion House stood until the eighties and into the nineties or later. At one time the Dugan brothers, eld time plumbers, occupied it, or part of it.) On later visits to Salem, the then young attorney, R. P. Boise, also stopped at the Cooke hotel In 185X, or perhaps In 1864, on one ot his visits, having heard that Rev. O. aekinson had come west with hat leader and was Ur Ing here, he aaaaaSred at the hotel the locaUsnt f the Dickinson home, and attter the evening meal took a walk, by way of -a trail through Chat thick timber and brush inleasCng to make a call there Car ne had known Mr- Dlckinsosi tn Massachusetts. The memory erf that visit remained with Maw tor it was no easy mat ter tar him to get through the tkaW.frpm the hotel to the Dlck- sa. atouse. Other old timers re call that the forest that thea cov ered the site of Salem along the Willamette river as far south as State street, and east beyond Com mercial, was full of deer and bear and. other wild animals, and that the logging for the Mission mill was at first carried on in that for est -the Jogs being drawn to. the mill with oxen. s " Judge Boise in his historical aketch, as the reader recalls, men tioned the Cooke (afterward the Mansion) House and the Mission House, but omitted the bland House.
