Carloadlngs of northwest fruits
and vegetables for the week end
ing October 23 amounted . to
3771 cars compared with 44(7
ears last week. This reduction
was common ' to all the major
commodities. The most noticeable
reduction being on the move
ment from Idaho, where only
slightly over 600 cars of pota
toes and 287 ears of apples were
shipped compared with 700 and
526 cars respectively for the pro
ceeding week.
Oregon shipments were: apples
221 cars, cauliflower 2, celery
20, mixed vegetables 1, onions
. pears 7f, potatoes St, Total
532.
F. O. B. apple prices have
shown little change daring the
past two weeks although selling
inquiry declined, probably as a
result of heavy unsold, loadings
last week. A flood of third grado
stock was received in California
via boat from the northwest, most
ly on consignment; and stopped
f. o. b. inquiry from that sector.
Demand tor the cheap crates or
lugs of Washington third grade
apples, which was quite active a
month ago, has become very quiet.
Worm Damage Unknown
Definite information relative to
worm damage in late varieties as
WInesaps is still lacking, but
Rome Beauty harvest shows
heavy worm infestation.
The mystery of "how big is
Oregon's cauliflower crop," now
appears solved. Originally esti
mated at 1.500-2,000 cars, ship
ments to date total approximate
ly 200 cars, with another 200 cars
of No. 1 'flower still in the fields
for shipment daring the next
eight weeks. If weather permits.
Much acreage was never harvest
ed, and much production, total
ling possibly 100 cars, was sold
locally and throughout the north
west by truck. Last week's prices
were ruinous to growers, with No.
1 stock realizing 20-30c per crate.
Growers are inclined to abandon
their production rather than roll
unsold shipment extensively.
Oregon celery matured this
season earlier than any recent
year, due to the prolonged hot
summer weather, and the custom-
any Period of pre-Thanksgiving
