Event is Fourth one; Judges
Will Announce Winners -At
7:30 o'clock
DALLAS, Oct. 29. Plans haTe
'taen completed for the fourth an
nual Hallowe'en parade for grade
school children and the event will
take place Monday night starting
at 7; 15. The parade will form at
the Dallas Junior high school
v building promptly at '7:15 in or
der that the Judges may select the
-winners In the various groups by
7:30. Following this the group
will march down Main-street-to
Court and then to the bandstand
where they will disband.

council granted permission to present-
parking on Main street be
tween Mill and Court or on Court
street between Main and Jefferson
between the hours of 7 and S p.m.
Chief of Police Neufeldt will be
assisted In the work of keeping
these streets clear by a detail of
Boy Scouts. Burton Bell was nam
ed as grand marshal of the parade
at a meeting of the committee
held Tuesday afternoon.

The prise list this year Includes
three room prizes, the first of
which Is a 3x5 American flag and
the second and thiid, vases. Two
grand prizes for boys and girls are
Included and will be given for the
best costumes in the parade re
gardless of the group they repre
sent. Prizes will be given in each
room for the most original cos
(ame, the ugliest mask, best
clown, beet witch, best jack-o-lan-tern
and best ghost costumes.
Eakin in Charge
State Commander Jack Eakin t
the American Legion will officiate
as, master of ceremonies at the
bandstand and has arranged for a
public speaking unit with which
to introduce the winners to the
spectators. He will be assisted by
'Bob Kreason, Earle Richardson,
and J. R. Beck in distributing
prizes.
The day will be climaxed by
the annual Hallowe'en dance held
by the American Legion auxiliary.
This will be neld-at the armory
with music by the Mills orchestra.

and was well attended. The par
lors of the church were bright
with floor baskets of fall flowers
and autumn foliage.
During the afternoon a program
consisting of a piano solo by Miss
Beatrice Jepsen, vocal solos by
Mrs. R. L. Cooper and Mrs. Lloyd
Dunivan. violin solo by Mrs. Sven
Eliasen. a monologue by Mrs. O

Mrs. W. G. Smith has returned
to her home in Mill City, from
Portland where she had been to
spend a few days at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. H. C. Patton.
Mrs. Smith accompanied her son-in-law,
H. C. Patton; to Portland.
. Patton is a timber cruiser for the
Hammond Lumber company and
bas been working In the vicinity
of Mill City during the past two
weeks.
Earl Fink Is improving his resi
dence property on the highway by
having an addition built and en
larging the house to the extent of
several rooms.

ence Powell, first; Helen Brown,

negro man and woman, second;
and Ruby Swanson, third, for the
advanced grade room.

PLEASANT TIEW, Oct. 29.
Mrs. Frank Cook received word
Friday of the death of her cou
sin, Mrs. Alvlra Hartley, 73, who
passed away at her home at Clark
ston. Wash. She was the mother of
Mrs. Earl Cook. Mrs. Hartley was
one of Oregon's pioneers, crossing
the plains by ox team with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Len
on, in 1865.
They settled near Monitor and
it was there that she spent all of
her girlhood and many year3 of
her married life. She was widely
known throughout the Willamette
valley.
She leaves to mourn her loss
Ler widower and four daughters.

H. McMahan, before a large and
appreciative audience at Sublim
ity Wednesday night.
Among the things brought out
by the Judge aside from conditions
In Oregon, was that the destinies
of the nation are controlled by a
few corporations. These corpora
tions gain control of the timber,
coal, oil and water power, and all
of these are destroyed except the
latter. His remarks certainly gave
his listeners something to think
about.
Senator Charles K. Spaulding
followed the Judge and made a
brief talk on taxes. Other speak
ers on the program were Rev. F.
Scherbring and Frank Bell. Mike
Benedict acted as chairman of the
meeting.

HOPEWELL, Oct. 29. While
his neighbors look on In dismay,
Dave Puro enjoys fresh strawber
rles. He had an unusually good
crop this year. After its harvest he
trimmed the vines, causing new
berries to grow. It warmer weath
er were coming he would probab
ly have some tor a few months
yet.
Harvest of English walnuts Is at
an end. An ordinary yieia was
gathered. Several local people are
employed at the walnut dryer In
Amity, where they hope to have
work for some time.
.The county has greatly improv
ed roads by graveling, cutting
down hills, straightening curves,
a new road and bridges. This has
given employment to many men.
Young people of the Christian
Endeavor held a party Friday
night In the basement ot the Unit
ed Brethren church; which was at
tractively decorated. Games were
played, after which a lunch was

School was closed Thursday and
