insurance 'company went out ot
business the property was bought
by the Salem T. M. C. A... and was
occupied by that Institution until
it moved Into Its present tine
home. There, and next door north.
is where Herbert Hoover as a boy
worked as clerk tor the Oregon
Land company, up to the time ot
leaying for Stanford university in
the fall of 1895: a stepping stone
In his life that led to his election
to the office of president of the
United States. Mr. Raymond was
long employed by O. Dickinson In
his seed business. Gideon Stols
started his career in Oregon as an
employee ot O. Dickinson. In his
seed gardens fronting on the Oar
den road; on land that is now the
site of a growing suburb of the
city, and will r long be taken
into the corporate limits.
Lawrence Lockley as a boy at
tended grade school In Salem and
high school in Portland, graduat
ing from the - Washington high
school in that city. Frederic Lock
ley, his grandfather, was a schol
arly man, an editor of newspapers
and s writer of ability. He waa a
resident of Salem for a number of
years.
Fred Lockley, father of Law
rence, had little formal education.
He picked up what he knows from
reading and interviewing people
and the work he has done in
newspaper and magazine editing
and publishing, and in writing his
lengthening list of books, shows
that he is one of the best inform
ed and most widely known men in
all the territory that comprised
the old Oregon country, and one
ot the best authorities on Its his
