3VEST SALEM, Oct, 18 The
community hall was full for the
tint meeting Monday night, when
the long vacation for the club was
terminated. A1.'C. . Henningsen,
president, and Mrs. Claudine
Gefth-Elbert, secretary, presided.
Prizes to the .winners o? the Home
, Beautification and improvement
. contest were awarded : first to the
Mark H. Hoffmans. secoud to the
Peter Foeikls and third to Mr. and
Mrs. L. T. Wallace; and with hon-
- orable mention for a dozen other
parties, Glenn L. Adams stated in
an appropriate address.
Reports were called for in re
gard to the relief committee, and
' the actions and suggestions of the
executive board were discussed. In
regard to improvements and re
modeling the community hall, it
was decided that a committee
from the club should meet with
and confer with the official board
of the West Salem church, their
findings to be reported at the No
vember meeting.
Brief talks were given by Mrs.
Anne CL Dashiell, candidate for
school superintendent for Polk
county; by Charles B. Hodgkin,
editor of the new West Salem pa
per; - announcement by Ray Fer
guson In regard to the proposed
American Legion post, with a fol
low up address by Col. Wagonfelt.
The -committee for . the enter
tainment for the next meeting
consists of James M. Fisher, Mrs.
Eugene Krebs and William L. La
Due. The committee named to
confer with the church board in
regard to building improvements
was George Chapman, Elmer G.
Cook and W. D. Phillips.
Other brief talks by political
candidates were made by Hugh G.
Black, G. W. Curtis, E. A. Hamil
ton, Wm. A. Boydston, and Ed C.
Dunn from the county candidates.
Following this an entertain
, ment was presented by the Wil
liam McGilchrist. Sr., Scottish Kil
tie band, consisting of Arthur
Hutcheon, John Charge, Earl
Strawbangh and James McGil
christ, with Robert Hutcheon,
William McGilchrist, Sr., and Miss
Maria accompanying.
Two band numbers followed the
talk by Mr. McGilchrist, a vocal
nolo by Robert Hutcheon, two
dances, the Highland fling and
the aword dance were given by
John Charge, vocal solo by James
McGilchrist, accompanied by Wil
liam McGilchrist, Sr., who joined
in the chorus; a group of songs
by William McGilchrist, with ac
cordion accompaniment and an ac
cordion solo, imitating the violin
solo, the Humoresque and the fi
nal band numbers.
DECLARE RESERVE
SIDNEY, Dec. 18 The Sidney
Talbot Farmers Union held its
regular meeting in the Talbot
chool house Friday night, with
about 75 people present. It was
announced a pie social and pro
gram will be given at the school
house next Friday night with the
public Invited, proceeds to go to
the union treasury. Those in
charge of the program are Mrs.
Freeman, Mrs. Delmer Davidson,
Mrs. D. E. Bllnston and Mrs. Gil
bert Belknap. A. L. Emmons and
Fred Wintermantel gave talks on
organizing a game reserve in this
vicinity.
Mr. and Mrs. George Potts, Mr.
and Mrs. Jake Gilmour and D. E.
Blinston represented this union at
the county union meeting held at
Central Howell Saturday. Mrs
Betty Kapauff, state secretary of
Eugene attended the Talbot meet
ing and gave an interesting talk

LYONS, Oct. 18 A meeting of
the board of directors of the Ly
ons People's Cooperative Tele
phono company was held Monday

Unless some plan is decided on
which will provide sufficient
means to meet the expenses, It
nay bo necessary to discontinue
the Lyons central 'phone office in
the near future.
L. H. Lewis who has been In
poor health for some time Is
quite sick, and during Sunday

summoned.
Mr. Gerher of Salem route six
was a Lyons business visitor. He
owns the garage and service sta
tlon which was recently closed
after Mr. Winters moved away
