Chemawa to Meet Rooks At Corvallis OREGON STATE COLLEGE, Corvallis, Oct. 7 Oregon State college freshman football team will meet the Chemawa Indians here at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon' in the first game on their season's schedule. The an nual contest is always colorful and interesting as the Indians are a fast, smart bunch of football players., Verne Ellers, freshman coach. Is fixed about as well as any freshman mentor on the coast this fall. About 60 men answered his initial call to practice and from that number he , has gath ered some promising looking can didates. ' The freshmen have been work ing against the "varsity during the past two weeks, and have shown flashes of good form in scrimmage. They are equipped with plays which rival schools will use against the varsity and are put on the offensive for a two hour period daily. The Chemawa game is the first ef three games on the Rook schedule. The other two contests are with the Oregon freshmen. The first Is scheduled tor Cor vallis, October 21,'mnd the second for Eugene, November 4. This "little civil war series" always excites much interest and rival ry every year. Seems like ball carriers have acquired a habit of traveling under unpro nounceable names of late. O Notice that we listed Kostka among those likely to be men tioned by the radio announcers. Ton heard he dislocated his shoulder? O Shucks, what's a dislocated shoulder gat to do with running and carrying the ball, or moat anything else a halfback has to do? They don't have to tackle this year; Just knock 'em down with a body block. Speaking of Kostka, we heard that Manford Olson, Bearcat full back,, was down at Eugene last Saturday and saw how that big boy went tearing into things re gardless. Olson figured he was just as big as Kostka and that maybe he could do that too, and has been doing It all week. " rrF i '' Salem Gridders Silver Foxes 18 to 0 in Opening Game By RALPH CURTIS The attack staged by Salem high school's gridiron warriors In their first interscholastic game Friday afternoon was not wholly convincing, but it was sufficient to turn back the Silverton threat 18 to 0. Silverton's flanks were almost totally unprotected and Knight and Ha user, Salem's di minutive but fleet halfbacks, each broke away once for a touchdown run. The third score resulted from a couple of "breaks". Moving into Silverton territory early in the first period on an ex change of punts WeiaseV out- kicked the opposition decisively all afternoon Salem scored on two successive plays from the 45 yard line, Hauser packing the oval around one end for 20 yards and Knight ontsprinting the Silver Foxes to gain the goal line. Per rine's place kick for the extra point was wide. Just as the first period ended Weisser punted to the one-yard line and Perrine returned the Sil verton punt .which opened the. next quarter, to the 1 6-yard mar then skirted the end for nine yards more." Weisser bucked for a first down on the five-yard Una and then went over but Salem was penalized on the play and set back to the first strip of lime, from which Hauser took the ball on a reverse and scored handily. The kick for extra point was blocked. Early in the third period a Sil verton punt was partly blocked and Salem got the ball on Silver ton's 16-yard line after being aid ed by a penalty. Three plays pro duced a first down, Weisser squirmed through for four more and Perrine went over for the third and final touchdown. A pass for extra point was incomplete. Silverton uncorked a spectacu lar passing attack in the final period after the Salem lineup was dotted with reserves, and inciden tally proved that these reserves could be counted on for tight de fense. After receivers had dropped several perfectly good passes, Sil verton began connecting with them and finally Hoyt tossed one which Pettyjohn caught on the dead run and carried to the two yard line. There Silverton tried four varied line plays, reaching the 18-inch mark on one of them, but was held for downs Just be fore the final gun. In addition to some effective ball toting, . Weisser participated in the stopping of numerous Sil verton plays. Martin and Engle were outstanding members of the forward defensive wall. Perrine ran the team in good shape and shone in punt returning. Rudis hauser and Pettyjohn performed capably for Silverton on defense and A. The Dallas team showed great improvement since the game with the alumni bat the Dayton team was small and no match for the locals. The Dayton line was weak and let the opposing tackles through on the ball car riers before they got started. Dallas received the ball on the opening kickoff and marched about 70 yards for a touchdown. It took Dallas Just eight plays to make the first score. The second touchdown eame after a aeries of long gains, when Bill Cadle took the ball across the goal line, Frack scored the first touchdown and made some long gains around end to assist in the second.
