Polk county 4ay at the Oregon state lair Tuesday drew a Urge at tendance ot Monmouth people, in cluding it udeHts ot the Oregon Normal achool; tigh Bchool and training department. Two school busses carried full -loads. j Miss Grace Mauri Mitchell, , director of the O. N. S. orchestra. presented a pleasing program and songs of the achool. Agricultural dabs ot this section were well represented. In the fi nal official contests ot the sum mer first place was won in Polk for stock Judging by the Inde pendence, calf dob, oldest organ ization of the sort in the coin- ty, and second place by the E)k ins Jersey calf club, a busy ag gregation whose leader ia J. V. Johnson of this community. The Independence boys bad first choice of the big fairs to do their Judging, and aa they chose the state fair. George Gentemann. Hugh Hanna, Robert Hanna and Hersel Peyree, their representa tives, are in Salem for the week. alf Club Honored i The Elkins Jersey calf club boys got Becond cnoice of Judg ing places, and took the Pacific International Livestock Exposi tion, which opens October 15 jat Portland. Boys chosen to repre sent this club as their official Judging team are Harold Crook, Maurico Smith and Glenn Lucas. These boys will accompany Coun ty Agent J. K. Sept. 28 A crowd enjoyed the Cotr., Blossom gingers who appeared Saturday night at the Christian chunjh. These entertainers prove biennial ly popular here, having appeared several previous times. They were here a few months ago in the au ditorium of the Oregon Normal school. I After the program the high school girls' and boys' Sunday school classes were entertained at a marshmallow roast at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Chambers. ' . :- . i r Following the first day of his trial on charges of participating in th illegal lotteries operated by the Loyal Order of the Moose, of which ht 13 an official, Senator James J. Davis (center) of Pennsylvania is shown as he left the Federal Court at New York with his attorneys. Senator Davis is accused of having received $172,000 personally from two Moose tontests. Sept. 2i. The October issue of "Hunter, Trap per. Trader." is of particular in terest at Silverton as it carries a story written by Richard Syr ing. Tha story is "Raising Bull Frogs" and refers to the frog farm in Washington. Syring, who is a graduate of Silverton schools and later ot the University of O.sfon, has been devoting his trrae this past year to feature writing with the result that many nationally known mag asines have carried his articles. His story of Clark Gable, motion picture star, which recently ran in a motion picture magazine, has been widely copied. On Monday, pages containing the story trans lated were received at Silverton from Cuba. The story was writ ten in the foreign language but the pictures were those taken at the time Gable was employed la tha Silverton lumber mill and the same used by Syring in his article. Meteor Seen By Two More Folks, Word STAYTOy. Sept. 21. Leon Jordan, eon of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Jordan of this city, is another one who saw the meteor, men tioned in The Statesman as hav ing been seen by a Gervals man last Friday morning. The boy is carrier here for the Oregoniaa and The , Statesman, and neces sarily is an early riser. His description tallies with the Gervals report, that the meteor was southeast of here, and was a most unbelieveable sight when it burst, making a wonderful ar ray of red and purple light. The boy claims he heard a noise as it went through the heavens. much like that made by a sky rocket, as it goes through the air before exploding.
