I 1 ""kk----Ba-BeaaHM Bits for Breakfast I (Continued from Page 4) gallon of Jnlce, that meant the use of 3,500,009 pounds of logan berries. To ssy nothing of the great quantities of apples for the Applejo. Therp was it big office force, and sales force, to say nothing of the large payrolls in mannfactar lng,,and handsome snms for the raw materials, etc The skies look ed bright The expansion had been rapid, and seemed certain of con tinuing indefinitely. V -b Then came the world war. and America's entrance Into it. Prices of loganberries shot np. Some whole crops brought 14 -cents a ponna. sugar soared In price, to say nothing of. labor and rery other cost connected with the bus iness. The concern held on: might indeed hare made the grade, even with 'soaring prices, which could of course not last rery long. S But the major tragedy came in IS 18, when it was proposed to put a war tariff on all drinks. The first prooposal in congress was for a 30 per cent duty on all sales. It was finally agreed, in committee, through the work of Senator Chamberlain and Con gressman Hawley of Oregon and others that, loganberry growing being a basic farm industry, no tax at all would be placed on its Juice. It had before been decided that 2c a gallon would be about right. That wonld hare been a living tax. But something hap pened. Oyer a week end, the de cision was made to tax such drinks 20 per cent on sales. That meant three times the cost of the materials that went into the bot tko for the drink. The body blow killed our flourishing loganberry juice industry. Two years later the government refunded the money that had been collected upon fruit juice drinks. That brought back to the Phez, Lioju and Appleju makers large sums perhaps $100,000, or more. But it was too late. The money went to the agent ot the bankers who had been the back ers; or perhaps to the bankers, who were entitled to It.
