Europe to be Better
Market This Week
Says Forecast
CHICAGO. Sept. 17 (AP)
Despite downturns at times la
sympathy with weakness of
stocks and cotton, the wheat
market today scored a little net
gain.
Suggestions that Europe would
be a good buyer of wheat next
week If prices showed stability,
were somewhst responsible. Re
ports that the Canadian pool had
transferred Its big holdings from
October contracts to Msy had
no apparent market effect.
Wheat closed unsettled at the
same as yesterday's finish to
4 to 3-5 higher, corn i
down, oats a shade to 1-8
to
4 orr.
Today's closing quotations:
Wheat: Sept. old 9 7-g; Doc.
5J 1-8 to U: May S34 to J-S.
Corn: Sept. 27: Dec. 2$
i-l to H: May 34 S-t.
Oats: Sept 15 3-8; Dec. 17
7-8; May 2f -8.
STEEL'S MESS
ITS SHE RISE
NEW YORK. Sept. 17. (AP)
Stocks loitered through a rath
er routine week-end session today.
Net changes favored the downside
but losses were small and it was
apparent that caution was still the
watchword in speculative quar
ters. Carriers moved up about 1 to 3
points daring the first hour and
Into the second, but were unable
to hold their gains and several fin
ished lower. Sales totaled 724.520
shares, lees buslaess thsn had
been done la the first half hour in
some recent sessions.
Heaviness of U. S. Steel prefer
red, which was off 4 points at the
worst, may have had something to
do with the Inability of industrials
to show enthusiasm. Steel com
mon, after selling a point higher,
closed a point lower. American
Can, Allied Chemical. Kennecott.
American Smelting. Harvester.
General Motors. duPont and Con
solidated Gas were off from a frac
tion to a point. Santa Fe, Union
Pacific and Canadian Pacific eas
ed In the late trading and the rail
average aagged slightly. Carrier
bonds, however, continued fairly
firm.
