Homecoming Is Slated by Island Club GRAND ISLAND, Sept. 15. ! The Grand Island Improvement club ia sponsoring a homecom ing event to be held on the school grounds Sunday, October rTnis is the first event of its nature held in the district and promises to be a very enjoyable time. About 125 notifications have been sent out by the committee to all persons who have in any way been connected with the Isl and community, past or present. A varied program of both lo cal and outside talent will be given in the morning and after noon. A basket dinner will be served at noon. Sept. 15 The Au rora fire department has answer ed seven calls in little more than a week. Tuesday two calls were turned In, one a brush fire at the Charles Arnold place north of town which was threatening buildings. The second was a saw dust fire at Joe Kings. Calls from Fargo. Union Hall, Butteville, Donald and a grass fire at the side of the road near Hubbard, have been answered averting con siderable loss. Members of the department show much interest and pride in the added equipment of a pump and water tank and feel equal now to any ordinary conflagra tion. More Students Planning to Go To University SILVERTON, Sept. 15 Each day more students are announc ing their plans, for the autumn. Franklin Evenson, who has been attending Reed College will transfer to the University of Ore gon this autumn. La Forrest McDonald will re turn to Willamette university; Martha Goodknecht, who was graduated last June from the Sil verton high school will enter state normal at Monmouth. Vernlta Brewer and Harold Irish will both study as post graduates at Sil verton high school. BRUSH CREEK, Sept. H. - Keiatives : nere nave received a letter telling of the 25th wed ding anniversary observances of Mr. and Mrs. Axel Larson at their home near Galata, Mont. The affair was held August 21, as a surprise to Mr. and Mrs. Lar son. Fifty neighbors gathered for the occasion. Henry Woare of Chester, Mont., known to many here, sang a group of songs. A gift of silver was presented to the guests of honor and a o'clock dinner was served by the surprlsers. This recalls to residents of Brush Creek the wedding which took place August 21, 1907. here. The Grand Island school district No. 94 will hold a special school meeting at the schoolhouse Fri day night, September 18, for the purpose of electing a new clerk to fill the vacancy made by the resignation of Mrs. Arka Law rence. The welfare committee at Silverton Is sending out an appeal to the women of Silverton to go to the Silverton Food Products company cannery Friday morning and as sist In - the preparation of the foods for the canning. The can nery officials are canning vege tables and fruits which are to be used in the welfare work here this winter. The committee has purchased cow which will be butchered and prepared by Lawrence Lar son of the City Meat company. This, with vegetables donated, will be made into a stew which will be canned for the winter's need. While considerable prunes and pears are at hand to be can ned Friday, the committee re ports that it can use more ot both fruits and vegetables. A day of canning was held last week and while a number of women responded more could have been used. Work at the can nery will begin at 8 o'clock. All work is donation work. Jane 19.
