The OREGON STATESMAN. Salem,' Oregon, Friday Morning, September 16, 1932 PAGE THREE CEIIHI TELLS OF fi atkins Berates Critics of Bovine Combat and Rodeo in hi Talk Before Clubs Extolling the quantity of Vol unteer entertainment for this year's state fair and contrasting It with the smaller amount of commercial features, Max Gehl kar, director of, the department of agriculture, strongly berited the critics of the rodeo and bull fight Hems on the programj tn addressing members of Lions land Kiwanis clubs at the Marion ho tel yesterday noon. j "Out of the whole program, a few short-haired women land long-haired men object to (five minutes of this program. They don't know that this Is . not : a real bull fight played all pver the United States. And the rodeo Is the cowboy Olympics, I the world's fastest growing sport. The rodeo at Wimbledon, Eng land attended by King George, drew the largest attendance! of any athletic event, j "The question is whether they ought to be self-appointed j dicta tors of what you ought to see. . The fair is and must be cosmo politan, must have something to fit all of us. The educational features of the fair are the Only reasonable excuse for the fair, but entertainment is needed to make It self-sustaining," hej de llared. i "The biggest single thing about the fair this year is ber of people who hate been vol untarily setting behind it to put the thing over. On thousand peo ple are coming here to entertain you and other people. The Inter est too have is not for this year; it's for the future. Portland worked hard for an expected 50,- 000 legionnaires; we expect 100, 000 persons." The state fair has gone far ther in music this year than ever before, Oehlhar said. Excursion trains will bring 18 bands and 55 other organisations from other communities. The excursionists. it is planned, will detrain down town and parade the streets, es corted by the Salem chamber of commerce booster committeemen and local bands.
