TOMORROW will be the first

leadership in Oregon and the
Oregon supreme . court will take
its - annual vacation of one
month. Several opinions will be
handed down tomorrow as the
final wind up.
John Kelly, political writer
on the Oregonlan, In aa in
formal discussion ihe other
night said he would remain in
Oregon for a while, mt least
until Congrese reconvene next
December. John like Oregon
lot, bat knowing bis deeper
likeness for politics a note, of
desire to return to the national
capHol was certainly detected
in his talk.
And just when the republicans
believed they had everything fix
ed up yesterday by the election
of Leslie Scott as chairman of
the state central committee.
Scott up and refuses the post.
As a compromise candidate Scott
was probably the most fitted for
the position.
Your correspondent missed
writing this column yesterday
for the reason he took a trip
to Portland to listen to the
highway commission hand a
lot to Salem and its environs
and also to attend the repub
lican caucus of Friday night.
Bat the caucus was short lived.
Nothing could be agreed upon.
The state highway commission
- the two members at least-
did a lot for this section of the
state at the meeting Friday after
noon. Not only did they agree to
mprove the Pacific highway to
urora. but also added some
rk on the Santiam highway
out of tne ieaerai am xuuas.

later.
The commission meets again
Friday of thia week at the
same place the Benson hotel
at Portland. At this session It
is believed more work for
Oregon will be decided. Bat
the big session will be at Port
land August 21. It Is hoped
that by the time ef the Fri
day meeting a new commis
sioner will be appointed.
One of the familiar figures
around the state capitol will be
missed after tomorrow. Gordon
