Stocks today recovered their

A reaction came early in the
afternoon, but wag soon checked
and the market had a fairly
strong closing. ,The turnover in
creased to C2f.T2t shares. Gains
of 1 to 2 points were numerous.
German bonds were reaction

otherwise the investment market
maintained Its recent reputation

Prussian dictatorship seemed to

sentiment in th steel industry

doubtless a market factor. Also
to be considered was the mar

New Orchards Coming in to
Bearing; Harvest Will
Be Late This Year
Increase in tonnag from new- -
walnut orchards will bring: - the
1122 northwest crop higher than
last year, with a probable pro-.
daction of between 2500 and 300
tons im Oregon and Washington,'
according to ut survey of early "
this year. The old orchards are
expected to show only a normal
yield on walnuts. The filbert crop
shown only fair prospects.
Harvesting dates will be later
than last year; probably the lat
ter part of September tor filberts
and the first of October for wal
nuts. Opening prices on walnuts
will be named during the first
week la October, when- California
also sets the price.
Blight dees ont seem to be so
apparent this year in filberts any
where, so far, but may show up
later. Walnut blight appeared
early this month, bnt does not
seem to be as heavy si usual. The
nuts appear to be growing fine,
and may be larger in size than
last year.
Opinion rarles widely relative
to filbert tonnage, with , north
western production estimated
from 200 tons upward. Light pol
lenation Is the causa ef the gen
eral light yields of both walnuts
and filberts.
California's 1922 production Is
estimated at 40,550 tons, orchard
run, compared to the unusually
light 1921 crop of 40,550 tons.
However, the crop this season will
be shorter than in 1927 and 1929.

A tain of 18.000 persons in
the farm population ot this
country from January 1, 1931. to
January 1, 1932, Is shown in es
timates Issued this week by the
federal department of agriculture.
The increase was from 30.612,000
persons to 31.2C0.000 persons on
the farm the first of this year.
The increase In 1931 was the
largest and most significant re
corded by the bureau of agricul
tural economics la the 10 years It
baa been making; population esti
mates. Only during: 1930 -and
1931 were appreciable gains indi
cated. The bureau estimates that l
472.000 persons left farms for
towns and cities last year, and
that 1, 079,000 persons moved
farm ward. The surplus of births
over deaths on farms was 441,000
making the 048,000 gain In num
ber of persons living on farms.
The figures do not take Into ac
count another change that has
been heralded as a "back-to-the-farm"
movement. Many city and
town families are planting subsist
ence gardens of from a quarter to
two acres, where formerly they
bought their foods. These are not
counted as farmers and so are not
among the farm population.
