Manager Frank "Burly" Bash' or, who caught Wilson all last season while the pair were play lng for Hills', stated Saturday that "Squeak" is much speedier than he was last year.' Wilson is also perfecting his curve ball which was only slight last year, and Is also showing a nice change of pace. Wilson and Harvey, who form the Senator's pitching stronghold, hare worked out four times dur ing the past week and have mixed track work In with the throwing to get into the proper condition The other players hare been working out hard and Bashor is well pleased with the fire and pepper the players are showing. Ashby at shortstop is going like a million and Adams on first sack adds a lot of class to the Infield Kitchen Is holding down sec ond and: also makes a good lead- off man for the batting order Coleman Rogers Is covering third base and his hitting has placed him in the list as cle&n-up man Team Hitting Well For Early Season Bashor will hold Wilson at the start of the game and his heavy hitting will be a big help. There were no stolen bases on Bashor at Eugene last Sunday. Chuck Wirth Started to second once, but was cut off so far that he turned around and went back to first. The Senators looked good in their first game and It was just a couple of early season bobbles ... which brought on the 4 to 3 do feat by the Townies. Scales, Ash by, Rogers, Adams, Colgan and Kendall all hit In that game. Ray Brooks, noted coach of the Winged M club in roruano. states that the team he is bring lng here today will give the Sen ators a good rub. Shirley Brown is a crack right hander and his team mates are a group of heavy stickers who have been playing together for considerable time. The hitting order of the Sena tors will be as follows: Kitchen 2b. Scales cf. Ashby ss. Rogers 3b. Adams lb. Bashor c, Colgan ' It. Foreman or Kendall rf, and Wilson p. The biggest upset of the day IT (Ufl COMMENTS .CUUTIS There's going to be a big state tournament in Salem this week and we'll bet a lot of yon sport fans don't know it. It s the state high school golf tour nament, with something like 64 players entered. And don't be fooled; this is no dub affair with the scores running np Into three figures. "These boys play right down around par, and when they play against the av erage business nuu golfer, they have to give away a stroke a hole to make it interesting. This tourney win be held on the Salem Golf club course Thurs day, Friday and Saturday, with medal qualifying play Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock and match play two full days starting Friday morning on an elimination basis with a consolation round tor the first round losers. 18 .250 .4 19 .174 The Salem high team inci dentally, has a good chance to win. It lost in the Willamette Valley league semi-finals to En gene, but while the local boys made no alibis, they had just returned from a three-day grind of golfing and traveling and were not at their best. . Eugene high Saturday won the league championship, defeating Parkrose 7 to 4 on the Salem club course. Wood and Leal of Eugene and Hull of Parkrose tied for low score at 74 two over par. Both of these teams will be I In the state tournament aiong with University high, Albany, Sll- verton, Woodburn, West Linn, Oregon City and probaoir otners. The Salem team came oat on top In a four-way match at Oregon City Saturday,; defeat ing Silverton 12 to Ot Oregon City 11 to 1, West linn OH to 2. For Salem Groves won OH points, Vincent 9, Utter 9 and Cline 8. Utter was low medalist of the day with 74. Groves of Salem and Wanaken of West Linn were close behind with 76. George Cannady was apparent ly off form in the meet and did not place in either event in whicn he entered. Three Willamette men are un defeated in their events thus far this season. These are Erwin Lange who has won the two mile in all three meets, James who has taken the 220 yard low hurdles each time and Jim Fantz who has won the discus three times straight running. The Willamette relay team has not yet been de feated. Cooke might well be with that group, but after winning the mile twice before, he slowed down Saturday to let Mealey win. HOURS DEFEAT RED BLACK Score 6-3; Perrine as Good As Vivette but Support -Lacking at Times Has-Beens Show They are Still Ball Players But Lose to High School 7-5 Timely hitting coupled with some choice "breaks' enabled the Chemawa Indian school baseball team to defeat 8alem Ugh t to S on the Indians diamond Satur day afternoon, despite the fact that Johnny Perrine, Salem high moundsman, looked rally as ef fective as his junior ball pitching mate of last year, Leonard viv ette. In view of th Indians' no taries over two college teams this season, the outcome was not dis heartening to supporters of the red and black. Coach Hollis Huntington's slim youngsters pounded Vivette tor 11 safe blows, considerably bet ter than the collegians have done. but Vivette was able to bear down in the pinches and his high fast one had the boys "biting.' Four of Chemawa's runs were technically earned . but better judgment on the part of Perrine' supporting cast would hare pro vided him with a shutout Vlv ette's hit In the first Inning bounc ed over a fielder's head for a home run, and in the eighth the Indians scored four runs when an infielder's throw to the right base would have retired the side. The other two runs were scored in the fourth on an infield error and were unearned. Elliott, rookie second Backer, was Salem's hitting star with three eafe blows. In the second Inning he drove In a run but bis other hits were wasted McCaf fery. Mason and VanCleave hit in succession for the two runs scored In the ninth after two were out. The score: WOODBURN. May 14 Wood- burn's "has-beens', who played the Woodburn high school team at the city park Friday afternoon. proved that they still have plenty of fire. The high school boys won. the score being T to S. The busi ness men's team this year consist ed . of more baeball players and fewer clowns than last year; how ever, there was plenty of comedy. Clyde, "Sap" Whitman, showed np well tor the business men, fielding well, as well as chalking np two runs. The high school boys made the first score In the second frame, when Landsem tal lied on L. Koch's right field hit. la the fourth Inning Whitman came home on a hit poled out by R easier. Dr. Gerald Smith, who was nmprlng bases, and lnclden- Boyle, 3b tauy cutting on me view ox cen- t cviiier ss ler ueia xor a numoer ot casn customers, was booed roundly on one ot his original decisions, handed out la the fourth inning. But Dr. Smith maintained that the business men must win some wsy. The fifth wss a big Inning for the high school, Boyle, Ottoway, Perry Landsem and Sklller scor ing. Halter put another run on the board for the school In the sixth. Pete Braasell, who should know better, overran second base and was tagged out. 8 killer scored again in the seventh, this time when Wisenberg, the "has beens'" pitcher, failed to throw la the general direction ot home plate, letting In the man perched on third base. A new high school battery took the field In the eighth. Hoppy Haines, Lake La bish onion magnate, who was playing first for the townies. missed a bad peg. so Schwab went to second, only to be tagged and called out by Dr. Smith when he got there. The business men rallied In the ninth, making four runs. Whit man eame in on a bad throw to second by Oearln. Pete DeOulre poled oat a long hit, scoring Bass ler and Brassell. Then Harley Hughes hit a long one Into left field, bringing in DeGulre. Probably a good item for the current "Believe It or Not" eon- test is the fact that the business men made only one error. They also made five hits. The high school boys made 12 hits The lineups: Salem High Ramp, ss . . . McCaffery, e Mason. Sb . . Additional Sports on Page 10 On the whole the team la not hitting as hard as It did during the last conference season, bnt part ot this Is due to the better class of pitching which Is being faced. Willamette is the only north west confereace school still unde feated in baseball. Whitman has dropped one to College of Idaho and won its other games from the Coyotes. The Bearcats hare won from Albany, Lintield and College of Paget Boundand they hare not yet faced Paclfie unl verslty. The Bearcats will not only be striving to win from Llafield Monday, but will also be seeking to establish an all-time record for conference play in baseball. Dur ing the past two seasons Wlllem ette has lost only one conference game and Is still undefeated this season with the west section of play half over.
