BETHEL, March 9 A large
and enthusiastic gronp of Farm
ers' union folk was present at the
March meeting of the Bethel lo
cal Monday night. Central Howell
local was well represented among
the guests. Ernest Werner, Mar
ion county president was present,
also Ronald Jones of Brooks lo
calu. John Schlndler was receiv
ed as a new member:
Two, speakers from Oregon
State college are to hoM an all

March 19 at 10 o'clock. The top
ics are dairy problems and poul
try problems. A basket dinner will
be served at noon. " Members of

tends Reports were given regarding
purchase of landplaster, slat, fly
spray and squirrel poison. A let
ter from the national president
was read, asking all units to send
in protests against a proposed fed
eral tax oa gas,-which tax would
fall heavily on j those using trac
tors and gas engines. The com
mittee appointed to send I In the
protest Is Mrs. J. R. Carrntbers,
S Hamtick and J. R. Carruthers.
At the monthly meeting of the
Farmer' union held at the school
house last night, the secretary.
Irvln Bartel, reported that be had
not bad any written communica
tion from the Valley packing com
pany regarding the controversy
about the price that Is being paid
the local farmers for hogs by the
Salem buyers.
The controversy centers on the
fact that a. less price Is paid In
Portland, represented to be justi
fied tfy the freight charge between
the two markets when It is report
ed that frequently the local pack
ers must go to the Portland mar
ket for a part of their suppllse,
and the deduction for freight
charges is not justified..
Also, according to the market
reports in the papers, the Salem
market divides at a maximum
weight of 200 pounds and the
Portland market at 220 lbs. Thus
the Salem farmer marketing his
hogs here at a weight between 200
lbs., and 220 lbs., must take an
additional penalty. The cured
products are sold on practically
the same market, as the Salem
stores carry the products from
both the Salem and Portland
