The opening lead was A's fourth best heart. Deducting 4 from 11, Z knew that B held two higher cards of the suit led than the 4; nrobablv the kine lay with A. B Elayed his 8 and, without think ig, Z won the trick with his jack, costing him game. Z did not realize the error he had made un til he had won a trick with his king of diamonds and attempted to gain entry to dummy. Of hand; Z led his 3 of hearts; A took the trick with the king; Y's 10 was played and g's 9 fell. Of coarse A knew that only the ace of hearts was missing- from his suit; he did not care whether mat was held by B or ZT because Y's Jueen and the missing ace must ail together, so he led back a low m m . a !L heart ana . was in ine ieaa wun five perfectly good diamonds star ing at him from dummy, with no Sossibl means of entering Y's and. Z gave A a club trick, and the latter ran off his two good hearts, upon which B discardea two worthless diamonds and Z let go one spade and one club; a spade lead put Z in ; again he led a club. B's jack won the trick and a return lead of a spade took out Z's last card of that suit, with his clubs still unestablihed. Another lead of clubs put B in. A was smart enough to discard his blocking spade, so that A took his two spade tricks, giving A-B a total of eight tricks, defeating Z by four tricks. All Z had to do to fulfill his contract was to win the opening lead with his ace of hearts, instead of his jack, lay down his king of diamonds, lead a small heazi, which A must win. No matter what return lead A made Z must finally win ten tricks, one trick more than his game contract. Dumb, play costing five tricks is expensive: certainly Mr. Hoover never would course he could not enter Y's excuse such waste.
