Feb 15 The ll-oom home of X. P. Wil liamson -was completely destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon while he and his daughter, Miss Carolyn and on Victor were at Stavton visiting another daughter. The blaze started about .4 o'clock from an unknown" origin, presumably tbe flue, and had gained such headway before it started that it was Impossible to check the fire, which spread to the fruit house and woodshed. The 14 cords of wood In the latter were still afire today. JOnly a victrola and a few quilts were saved. New furniture and clothing purchased last week were destroyed. The fire spread to the large dairy barn several , times, but fighters prevented serious dam age here. A ' son, W. II. William son who lives a half mile away, discovered the blaze first, and rushed there, cutting wires from the light plant in the large garage, where oil was stored. Mr. Williamson will rebuild right away. He has farmed here for the past 47 years, and has added vast improvements to the home place of 239 acres. In the fire a mountain ash, planted among the shrubbery and brought here 50 years ago by John Gilbert, was destroyed. Only partial insurance was held. the past five weeks. The Bines won the contest by three points over the Reds. Joslah Wills visited the Alrlie school Thursday afternoon enter taining the students with a short talk and showing them views of some paintings. The Airlie Ladies Aid society held its regular meeting Thursday on honor of Mrs. Bill Woods who is moving to Kelso. Washington soon. One-half the proceeds goes to the Liberty community club, and the other half to the unemployment fund. Ilia Krauger had the misfor tune, while playing in the school basement, to fall against the fur nace. She burned her left arm quite badly. The school observed the birth day anniversaries of O e o r g e Washington and Abraham Lincoln by appropriate exercises Friday. Miss Hummers grades Joined those of Miss Kirk's room. Val entine's were also distributed In each room. The Liberty community dub met at the hall Friday night for Its regular meeting. After a short business meeting the following program was enjoyed. THE CANDIDATES NORTH HOWELL, Feb. 15 Regular grange meeting of North Howell grange No. 274 was held Friday night with 40 members and four visitors present. The obligation of the third and fourth degree was given to three candidates and during the lecture hour a fine program was enjoyed. Amon. tho?e taking part were "Mattie' Vireton, Evanell Esson. Dorothy Bump, Robert Drake, and George Cline. Daisy Bump and Ena Harmon reported on their McMlunville trip where they listened- to National Lecturer J. C. Farmer. .Mr. Harmon also went to Mc.Minnville. Mrs. Georg ia Mintor of Warren. Ohio, a re cently returned missionary of the Christian and Missionary alii ance. Friday morning talked to the school children at North Howell about customs and condi tions in China, where she has been a missionary. Mrs. Mintor and her friend. Miss Anna Gar land of Washington, D. C, are taking an extended motor trip through the coast states and while in North Howell are guests at the hospitable home of Mr. and Mis. August Woelke. Mrs. Mintor talked at the church here last Sunday. At the sjiocial grange meeting held Wednesday night in the grange hall. Mrs. Bernice Sum mors, Caroline Bump and R. C. Jefferson, Jr., were initiated in the first and second degrees and tbe work was completed Friday evening at regular grange meeting. MONMOUTH, Feb. 15 Mon mouth high school's debate teams won two victories yesterday. Jus ts Johnson and Mabel Schirman, affirmative side, went to Leban on where they defeated that team. The judges were faculty members of Albany college. At Monmouth, Lucille Wilson and Helen Blodgett, met a team from Corvallis high and debated the same question, with Mon mouth taking the negative side. Judges were Philip Schweizer, Van Crlder and P. H. Johnson. Monmouth will debate again Thursday, the affirmatives meet ing Philomath here, and the neg atives going, to Albany. OLSON HONORED BRUSH CREEK. Feb. 15 Mr, and Mrs. L H. Meyer and Miss Althea Meyer motored to Hubbard Thursday night to attend a party given at the home of Mr. and Mrs Alvln Williams for Mrs. Williams brother, Einar Olsen, whose birth day it was. Mr. Olsen had Just re turned from several months in Alaska, where he has spent almost every summer for the past 20 vears. Mr. Williams is a brother of Mrs. Meyer. Both the Williams and the Olstns are former resi dents of Brush Creek. The Olsens lived for several years on Para dise "alley on the place now occu pied by Mrs. Einar Anderson. "Dad" Bays that from .his point of view the present depres sion is not nearly so bad. Mrs. Sickafoose died in 1911. He has one son. Ernest of Los Angeles; five grandchildren, and one great grandchild. In September 1919 he was mar ried to Mrs. Nannie Cook Mar cum, a daughter of Oregon pio neers, and a long time resident of Monmouth. He has been a member of the Christian church for 40 years; an Odd Fellow for 47 years; and a member of the Encampment tor 45 years. In 1926 ho enjoyed a trip to Philadelphia as a state re presentative of the Grand lodge, and besides attending the Sesqui centennial exposition ha visited Mount Vernon and was presented to President Coolldge at the White House. The high school faculty and students have been celebrat ing his anniversary with him for many years. Skeen observed their 68th wedding anniversary Friday at their homa In Mon mouth. They were married Feb. 12, 1874, near Auburn. Nebraska. Mr. Skeen has been engaged in farming all hit life, and although retired from extensive operation now, he continues active in care of a garden, cows and chickens. Ha is 10 years old, and was horn In Indiana. Mrs. Skeen. whose maiden name was Gertrude Walts, is 76. She was born In Missouri. She does all of her own work, and en joys good general health ana good eyesight. They have lived m Oregon since 1917. They have two chil dren, F. K. Skeen and Mrs. D. L. Williams, both of Monmouth.
