Street Commissioner, Salem, Oregon. F-9-10-11. Business Directory 1 complete analyses ot the opera tion ot the rarious units ot state gOTcrnmont, and copies ot the au dit reports are la great demand by departmental heads, who are thus enabled to get a good picture in perspective of the work under them. These audit reports are the beginning of what we hope some day to hare, a system of con solidated reports, so that the en tire financial structure ot the state can be seen In one piece. Quite a bit has been written recently In eastern magazines about gasoline tax evasions, gas oline bootlegging, and excessive refunds of gasoline taxes. In Ore gon, we are particularly fortunate in regcrd to gas tax laws being the first in the field we have had the jump on other states with our legislation, and safeguards have been thrown around almost every phase of the situation. There is no wholesale evasion of the payment of the tax, but occasionally we have a Mr. John Agriculturist who claims more refund for farm ing purposes than he has coming Our system ot auditing and check ing these claims has resulted in stopping payment of hundreds ot dollars, while those who have ren dered false claims and perjured themselves are taking chances on going to jail. A Silverton man was indicted and sentenced to the state penitentiary during the past year for making a false claim for a refund of gas tax, and our de partment now has two cases ready tor indictments where fraud was resorted to in attempts to beat the state. The election division of our of fice will be a busy department. soon, as it takes a lot ot prelimin ary work to get ready for the voters of Oregon to cast their bal lots. The year 1932 will see two elections, the May-prlmarv and the November general, and the four hundred and Home thousand registered voters of the state will want a lot of infotlnation about candidates, candidates will want a lot of information on how to get on the ballots, and the Judges and clerks of election will want to know a lot about how to proceed with the ballots. Our office is the center of all state election activ ities, and supplies are already be ing arranged and the voters list brought up to date. All our other departments, too, are functioning smoothly, the year 1932 looks like better times. and the department of state Is ready to continue with its share of the work of state government anxious and willing to be ot ser vice to the public, and counts the events of the past year as water over the wheel of good experience, Radio Programs Wednesday, February 10 KOAC 660 Sc OervaQia 7 :00 Good meraJng meditation, let Vf Bev.
