Max Gehlhar director. has issued Bulletin No. 1 giving a review of the activities of var ious divisions of the department. It is a 20 page booklet, a write-up being devoted to each of the op erating divisions. Operating sav ings are claimed by the director who is in general charge of the expenditures. Regarding the state fair the bulletin reports: "Hard times did not affect the last state iair seriously, out standing obligations on .January 1 are approximately 10,000 less than a year ago. The success of the rodeo and other new features helped to make this possible. "The fair was taken over by the Department of Agriculture last July under a serious financial handicap: $143,500 bond Issue; $8,078.31 current obligation due; premium list exceeded appropria tions by $11,495.88. Appropriations For Deficit IsMade "Last February the legislature appropriated $16,408 to apply on the deficit then existing. The def icit last July and the overdraft on the premium list together totaling $19,574.19, and also the interest on the bonded debt, have been paid in full, as also several thous and dollars' worth of new con struction and painting. "The state fair budget calls for getting completely out of the red in 1932, and paying $8,500 on the bond issue. The most rigid economy will be necessary to bring this about in. a year of de creased revenues. ."The horse show proved Quite a financial setback. The total cost exceeds the receipts by $8,727.02, without counting such general Items as building insurance and maintenance, music, decorations, ushers, ticket sellers, etc., which are paid for oat of regular outside gate receipts. Mrs. W ilaoa Mad Head of Exhibits "The act creating this depart ment makes the director of agri culture the business manager of the state fair. It abolished the old fair board and the position of fair secretary. "Mrs. Ella S. Wilson, who for several years has been secretary of the state fair, continues in the position of "director of exhibits," and will have full and complete charge of everything connected with exhibits and Judging, and everything of -that nature, while the business management of the fair will remain directly under the department as In the other divi sions of the department. ."The fairgroands office has been closed np, and all the office C1I0 IIS HELD HI GERVAIS, Jan. 27 The Her mosa club met Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. A.
