Legion Junior Team to Play
On City Grounds; Oth
V er Business up
WOODBURN, Jn -"2 Fifty
dollars fa a lump sum wra voted
by the city council to be given to
the local American Legion post
for. the, Improvement of the city
baseball field at a meeting held
in the council chambers ot the
city hall Tuesday night. The park
is to be used as home field for
Woodburn's junior Legion base
ball team. The seniors may also
put a team into the Cascade Lea
gue. The Legion has agreed to put
up nine-foot fence around the
park, repair the grandstand, take
out certain trees that hinder the
effectiveness of the ground and
lay-out the diamond. The council
vu asked to provide money for
plowing, discing, leveling and
rolling the field and a water line
to the field. This the governing
body refused to do. The Legion
wants a three-year prior right to
the grounds. ,
One of the many long discus
sions of the meeting was concern
ing the advisability of having
certain persons on the west side
of Corby street connect onto a
sewer pipe on Lincoln street,
which - was originally constructed
to serve another sewage district.
Persona living on the west aide of
the street do not wttnt the sewer,,
as they run their refuse through
cesspools and septic tanks and
connect directly with the slough
nearby. The city will procure an
engineer to decide if the Lincoln
street sevper has enough' capacity
for the new proposed line If those
who petitioned for such a line
pay for It
The council decided to pay a
gravel bill presented by the coun
ty at the last meeting. v
- Mayor W. H. Broyle explained
the workings of the charity board
here. He also pointed out that
Woodburn is on the county roll
for- $330. of the unemployment
fund. Already $82 have been re
ceived. The county Insists that the
roll of persons aided by this fund
be approved .
Councilman Espy reported that
some power, poles on Wilson
street are unsightly and some ot
the equipment is unnecessary.
The power company will be re
quested to put the poles in their
right places in relation to prop
erty lines. The street width ws
changed from 50 to 40 feet, one
reason for the discrepency. -
A letter from the light com
pany was read, saying that that
company will Attempt to give sat
isfactory service hereafter. At the
last meeting k of the . council ten
per cent of the bill was deducted
because service during the month
of December was unsatisfactory.
The signs proclaiming that 'D
turns are prohibited on Front
street c ame up for discussion.
Some temporary signs put up are
too small. It was the opinion that
the signs be twice or three times
larger.
