Mordaunt Goodnough To Play in Salem Mordaunt Goodnougb, Portland pianist, will appear on the Janu ary 25 program to be given by the Salem MacDowell club In the stu dio of Prof, and lrs. T. S. Rob erts. With him will appear Gladys Mclntyre Thomas, soprano, who has proved herself such a popular soloist In Salem since her return from several years study In Chi cago. Mr. Goodnough needs little in troduction to Salem musical cir cles, for he has been an outstand ing pianist in Portland for a num ber of years, and is, as he de scribes himself, not a celebrity but a very serious pianist, and as such has something fine to give his audiences. His Salem program will include Baeh, Mendelssohn, Liszt and Chopin, a classical and romantic program chosen from . composers whose work spells beauty. Mrs. A. E. Wickert was the first hostess for a new club which was organized Thursday at the Wickert home. The name is "Variety" club and will meet ev ery second week. Mrs. Bert Pitcher will be the next hostess. Donni Cony.e was installed as worthy advisor of the local girls' chapter. Will Hold Limelight This Week SOMETHING not ordinary lies marked on the calendar for this week's social activity. Since time began society has been a patron of the arts and this patronage will be exer cised beginning with Tuesday evening when the Salem Arts League will present Anton Piers, a Netherland painter, who has been, in the Pacific northwest for the past few years, painting landscapes. Mr. Pier will lecture on the subject of art and especially in regard to what he has attempted to accomplish and will present a number of his own works which have recently T '2 been on exhibit in Portland. Prominent v M - n To Wed Dallas Maid DALLAS Announcement of the betrothal, of Miss Aug usta Gerlinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl F.- Gerlinger of Dallas, to John W. Kitzmiller was made Friday evening, when Mrs. V. O. Williams, sister of Miss Gerlinger, entertained at bridge. At the close of play, the guests were seated at an attractively ap pointed supper table, which was clverly centered with a miniature football field scene. Each cover was marked with a small football, which contained the announce ment of the betrothal. Prizes for the evening were awarded to Mrs. Lawrence Smith and Mrs. Erie Fulgham. Guests were Miss Frances Martin of Sa lem. Mrs. Harry Mueller. Mrs. Don Grllley and Miss Virginia Man ning, all of Portland, Miss Helen Copple of Hood River, Mrs. L. H. Mardia of McMinnville, Mrs. Paul Skeels, Miss Nina Farley. Miss Ethel Jackson, Miss Marjorie Jackson, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Fulg ham, Mrs. Maurice Dalton, Mrs. Al Rogers and Miss Margaret Friar, all of Dallas. Miss Gerlinger, who is one of the most popular members of the younger set, was graduated from the University of Oregon in 1930, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She took an active part In campus affairs, and was prominent on the campus. Miss Gerlinger Is at present em ployed in the office of Dr. R. E. Lee Steiner at the state hospital at Salem. Mr. Kitzmiller, whose home is in Harrisburg, Pa., also attended the University of Oregon, where he became widely known for his brilliant playing on the football team. He completed three years of competition football in 1930. Mr. Kitzmiller returned recent ly from the east where he com pleted a successful season of pro fessional football with the New York Giants. He is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. A date for the wedding has not been definitely set. but will prob ably be an event of the summer. Girl Reserves Plan For Conference High school Reserves will je- gin with their meeting this week in the Y. W. C. A. fooms two projects which will aid them in being hostess to the large dele gation of Girl Reserves who will be guests in Salem at the spring conference to be held February 26-27 and 28 in the First Pres byterian church. These two projects taken up under the direction or Miss Helen Breithaupt. advisor, will be "Know Your City", and "How to Be Gracious Hostesses". Mrs. W. T. Jenks will meet with the 9th grade Parrish Re serves and continue the project in "Etiquette" whcih this group is working out preparatory to giving a tea in compliment to the 9A and 8A of the school January 1 at the home of Miss Helen Weidmer. Mrs. Elizabeth Gallaher and Mrs. David Bennett Hill will meet with the Leslie Reserves Tuesday at the school and the projects for the remainder of the year will be planned. The 7th grade of the Parrish Reserves will meet Tuesday and the 8th grade Reserves will meet Friday. Falls City. The Friendship cir cle was entertained Thursday af ternoon in the M. The lecture Tuesday night is open to the public as it is one of the regular monthly programs presented to the public by the Salem Arts League. Saturday a large number of the women of Salem will be interest ed in the meeting of the Salem Woman s club at the clubhouse. Several matters of importance are scheduled for the business meet ing and the program is a lecture by Dr. A. A. Vazakas of Willam ette university who will speak on the general subject of "Mexico." Dr. Vasakas studied in the Uni versity of Mexico last summer and will have some interesting things to tell his audience. Suggestive of the spring is the meeting of the executive board of the Salem Garden club being call ed by Miss Edith Schryver, pres ident, to meet Monday night in the chamber of commerce rooms at 8 o'clock. Plans will be dis cussed for the spring flower show and all Interested in this and who are members of the club are ask ed to meet with the executive board at this time. A very large affair of Saturday night of this week is the Chem eketan banquet which will be given in the banquet rooms of the Masonic temple. A social evenlnr rwill follow the banquet hour and It Is expected that over a hundred guests will attend. Mrs. Glenn Hoiman is in charge of arrange ments. The public is being invited to attend a lecture to be given Mon day night in the fireplace room of the city library under the spon sorship of the international rela tions committee of the American association of University Women. The speaker will be F. Chiu, Willamette university student, and a native of Manchuria. He will speak on conditions there as he knows them. This comes at an apropos time and should be of much interest.. Reception's welcoming new of ficers and honoring outgoing of ficers will be an important part of the organization calendar for the week. Salem chapter of the American War Mothers, Chad wick chapter of the Eastern Star, and the Order of the Amaranth will be among these organizations to so honor officers. And the usual round of parties both small and large will dot the calendar here and there during the six days ahead. Enough, and more to keep each matron and maid of Salem busy and Inter ested. Little Light Bearers To Have Party Mrs. A. A. Lee will entertain with a party between the hours of 2:30 and 4:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the social rooms of the First Methodist church in com pliment to the Little Light Bear ers of the church. A program and refreshments are planned for the wee people who make up this group. Mrs. George Moorehead and Mrs. Wallace Griffith will assist with the program. Assisting host esses will be Mrs. J. L.
