Mr. and Mrs. George Elgin of Stocks Rally Toward Close On Basis of Wage cut Accepted by Espee By JOHN L. COOLET NEW YORK, Dec. S0(AP)' Encouraged by a firmer tone In bonds, stocks allowed themselves a late rally today, although dur ing most of the session trade was Quite perfunctory and uneventful. Fixed Income securities and lib erties and the investment market returned a net gain, as measured by the averages, for the first time in several days. There was no ready explanation for the rise by governments since money was somewhat firmer, but the showing was none the less favorably re- cel.fl. Stocks had a fair advance soon after the opening when traders appeared to be making the most of the wage cut accepted by some Southern Pacifie employes. This improvement, however, failed to draw a following and gains dwin dled away. The last hour saw an other reversal of the trend, with the result that net advances in leading issues ruled from a frac tion to a couple of points. Trans fers totaled 2,110,991 shares. U. S. Steel rose swiftly In the final quarter hour, getting 1 7-8 higher on transfers of 1,000 to 5,000 shares. It then went down Just as fast and by the close only an eighth of the gain remained American Telephone, which had refused to follow the morning up turn, finally acquired enough strength to finish a point to the good.
