The announcement came with the dessert course. Tiny pieces of paper containing the names of the betrothed were tightly rolled, wrapped in red paper and placed In the center of inhividual cakes. They appeared to be candles until Investigated and when unwrapped displayed the surprise. The gift to the house was also presented following the engage ment announcement and tele grams from absent members were read. Miss Styles, who is now a sen ior, has been an active member of university circles all through school. She is president of her sor ority. Alpha Phi Alpha; vice-president of the student body, and is president of Theta Alpha Phi. in addition to having majored in French and taken part in many other school activities. Mr. Nelson is affiliated with the Alpha Pal Delta fraternity. No date has been set for the wedding. For the past two months the Rebekah lodge has been enjoying a series of programs given under direction of committees appointed to serve for the month, the Idea being competitive with an award for the beet program end of the two months. A tie was declared at the Monday night meeting and awards were given to members of the two committees, Lillyan Flee ner, Alma Henderson, Verda Olm sted, Louise King, Elsie Townsend and Wild a Siegmund. The Christ mas party for the lodge will be enjoyed Monday night in the I. O. O. F. halt Lillyan Fleener, Grace Taylor, Luella Engstrom, Ger trude Cummlngs. and Lenoir Kreisel make up the committee in charge. Willamette Will Sing Carols Tonight Tonight Christmas carols will ring In the chapel of Waller hall when Willamette university stu dents under the direction of the Pep club of the university will gather to celebrate the annual Christmas sing. In former years the glee clubs of the school have taken over the Christmas caroling, but this year a bit different program Is being planned. The chapel has been dec orated tor the occasion with small fir trees and greens. Miss Betty Boylan and her committee and members of the Cubs and the Blue Key had charge of the decorating. The program will begin at 7:15 o'clock. The T. M. C. -A. and the Y. W. C. A. will have vesper serv ices as a part of the program and at this time Prof. J. T. Matthews will speak. Miss Helen Styles will give a reading, accompanied at the or gan by Miss Merian Armitage. Miss Marjorie Winder and Miss Jeanette Scott will present violin duets, and there will be group singing of many old carols and Christmas songs dear to the heart through long years of yule-tide tradition. To this service any interested townsperson Is invited, together with all the university people. Writers Section Presents Work An excellent presentation of work was enjoyed by the writers section of the Salem Arts League Tuesday night when It met as the guest of Mrs. Claudius Thayer in her home, Willamette Lodge. To be a member in good stand ing in this group It Is necessary to contribute regularly some piece of original work. Tuesday night much material in verse, prose and a talk by Dr. Carl Holliday, presi dent of the League of Western Writers, the latter by Dr. F. O. FTanklin, were given. Dr. Holli day would like to organize a branch of the League In Salem. Those presenting verse were Mrs. J. 0. Nelson. Mrs. Ora F. Mclntyre, Mrs. J. M. Clifford. Miss Eenska Swart, Prof. William Lawrence of Corralll; stories were- read by Miss Grace Elisabeth Smith, Dr. Mary Rowland and Mrs. Jessie Singleton. A special feature of th- pro gram was a poem written by the late Claudius Thayer and read by Mrs. F. G. Franklin, leader of the section. J. M. Clifford reviewed the Ufa of Vachel Lindsay and a discussion of his work followed. A display of batik work by Dr. Rowland added Interest to the varied program. Refreshments and a social hour concluded the pleasant evening. Mrs. Lynn Cronemlller and Mrs. W. F. Fargo assisted Mrs. T. O. Franklin In serving. Prof, and Mrs. William Law rence of Corvallis, Prof, and Mrs. Lawrence ZUlmia. and Mrs. J. SC. Devers were additional guest for this evening. Members present were Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Clifford, Dr. and F. O. Franklin. Dr. Mary Rowland, Miss Grace Elizabeth Smith. Mrs. J. C. Nelson. Miss Renska Swart. Mrs. Lynn Cronemlller. Miss Lucy Hlg gins. Luncheon with attarotlve Christ mas decorations used for the table, preceded the afternoon of contract. Mrs. Clarence Keene and Mrs. Romeo Goulet tied for high score and Mrs. Homer Goulet won tha consolation prize.
