With tew exception the trend of all major markets was downward. The brightest ray of light that appeared in an ' otherwise drab stock market session came from copper. The report from London that Belgian owners of rich Congo mine had agreed to curtail pro ducttoi was greeted with enough enthusiasm to carry copper stocks gainst the general trend. An important contributing cause' tor the day's selling which swept orer the commodity as well as securities markets was the weakness of sterling The cable rate declined 7 cents to $1.54 and offerings were reported large In both London and Paris. While stock exchange sales totaled only 1,855.755 share, which Is substantially below nor mal business, today was the most actire of the week. ' Stocks of practically all classes except coppers gave ground un der modest offerings and the railroad Issues again went to new low prices. Losses of 2 to S points occurred in Union Pacific, Atchi son. New York Central. Southern Pacific and Pennsylvania, among others. Railroad preferred stocks.
