made the tree an object of beauty.

(AP) Victor M. Knott, special
patrolman, was shot and weaaded
fatally la a gnn battle with two
itinerants here tonight. He died in
a hospital shortly afterwards.
Knott and Ray Layman, night
patrolman, approached tha two
men at the Southern Pacific de

saw the officers, the two men
drew guns and started firing. The
officers returned the fire and in
the exchange of shots Knott fell
