Bonds Weak With Several
Of U. S. Issues Touching
Lows for Season
By JOHN U COOLET ;
NEW YORK, Oct 1 (AP)
With " the exception f bonds, fi
nancial markets retaraed a bal
ance of gains today.",
Stocks refused to be frightened
by early heaviness of the rails and
Advanced slowly with copper
showing- the way. Net gain were
largely fractional and trading was
dull.
In bonds several United States
government - Issues touched new
lows, while, many railroad liens
acted as though they had been dis
couraged by thejeontinued absence
" of the favorable news predicted
last week; -.
Wall street seemed content to
let stocks mark time until a clear
er . appraisal ; of the outlook is
available. President Hoover's con
ference with Premier Laval of
France looms as the most Impor
tant event of the week's calendar.'
The situation in the far east is
closely wsched.
Many stocks moved in a one
point range. Coppers profited, by
somewhat better buying of foreign
consumers and the prospective in
ternational production conference.
Gains of a point or more In the
groups were numerous. Chemicals
also advanced. Most rails reduced
their early losses; some cancell
ing them. Union Paclf ie lost 2- net.
Such prominent industrials as
TJ. S. Steel, Bethlehem, General
Electj-ic, General Motors, National
Biscuit and Case averaged, naif a
point higher at the close. Ameri
can Telephone and North Ameri
can gained more tbaa a point.
Bales of 858.757 shares were the
smallest since September 1. '
Sterling rallied strongly, touch
ing tl.91 and closing at
89 tor a net gain of 1 cents:
Most other foreign rates were
steady to firm. The Japanese Yen
Improved but lost two-thirds of Its
rise. v

Chickens Gain Despite
Efforts to Force :
Reductions
PORTLAND. Oct. Is (AP)
Trading In the local egg market
Is very firm. Despite the talk that
Clark county Interests are selling
their eggs in Seattle because of
the alleged lower- market here
the Washington co-ops continue
to quote Portland delivery at the
same price as listed by the Ore
gon association. ; . .
In general a dull but tairly
steady tone Is reflected in the
market tor : cheese- at I leading
American sources. Little change
in the price situation is Indicated.
Ia spots the market was a trifle
weaker, elsewhere- it was frac
tionally, better.
'While t there Is Increasing
strength for chickens and even
late price' advances In the. local
trade tor some offerings, efforts
continue to be made to force re
ductions here while the south Is
on a higher basis. -
It Is becoming more difficult to
move supplies of hen turkeys at
adequate prices her at the mo
ment. For best - dressed hens
sales are extreme at 28c and trade
is draggy. Large young tpms.
weighing 14 lbs., or better, ' are
up as high as 12c lb. - ...
' - While prices were not changed
tor the week's opening, a rather
slaw trade Is Indicated for coun
try killed!: calrea. Some sales,
however, were below established
quotations. Hogs were easy but
fairly good movement was noted.
Lambs in good request.
Orertures are being made by
warring interests in the local ter
ritory to settle the "oyster war"
which recently brought the value
of large- Pacif ie here to below cost
of production. .
