Presented to Salem

national recognition on account
of the excellent! quality of their
poetry, will be presented to the
Salem public Tuesday evening la
the auditorium of the Salem Pub
lic library by the Salem Arts
league as Salem's part In the ob- '
servance of National Toetry
Week.
National Poetry i Week was
first observed in 192? and since
then has become as recognised
throughout the United States as
National Music Week. The aim
of the week is to honor those
who have achieved -.recognition
by the music of their words, to
encourage people to write poetry
and learn the beauty of poetic
ideas, and to develop a higher
standard of appreciation.
In starting this observance. It
was pointed out that all persons
possess the tools of poetry
words. Poetry, as ' all the other
arts, has responded to new forms.
and It Is declared that "the his
tory of poetry Is the history of
civilisation."
Both Poets Hare
Won Recognition
U ' Both the poets to be presented
by the Salem Arts. League have
won recognition In the east and
have been received with acclaim.
Howard McKinley Corning has
published two books of poems,
"These People" and "The Moun
tain in the- Sky," both of which
hare been highly commended by
the reviewers. 'Ethel Romlg Ful
ler appears In the national mag
azines and, in addition, has pub
lished a book, "White Peaks and
Green."
This program, at which boOt
poets will read their poems and
talk, will be free to the general

Viola Price Franklin and Mrs.
John Clifford comprise the com
mittee In charge.
