Tuesday the; same players put on an exhibition of walking in their sleep and allowed the ancient foe- men, of Eugene to carry home a 1 2 to S victory. - A significant fact Is that four times Salem men. were caught napping off base by the alert Eu gene hacksters. This same con dition i was prevalent In all de partments of the game. perrine .was knocked out of the box in Just one and two-thirds in nings and was followed by Van Cleave who pitched a good game. WHEN Jimmy McLarnin en gages Billy Petrolle is a 10-rounder at : Madison Square Garden next Friday night, friends of "Baby Face" hope he will feel like the immortal Stanley Ketchel did when he squared off with the famous Billy Papke in their second battle. Ola-timers may say it's quite far-fetched to invoke the heroic shade of Ketchel in con nection with "such glorified club ighters as McLarnin and Petrolle. Nevertheless there is a parallel so far as the fistic fates weref and are, concerned. And here it is. Petrolle gave McLarnin a severe beating during most of their 10- rniiTif snek-fost In Kw York Citv last Nov. 21. ft was a genuine up set, for Jimmy was a 4-to-l favor ite to win.. Now if McLarnin is of the Set. chel mould, he may do to Petrolle -what Stan did to Papke. He must banish dire thoughts of the batter ing that Billy dealt out to him little more than five months ago. Jimmy demonstrated his remark able courage last time. . Next Fri day, he will have to prove nis class or be relegated definitely oat of championship consideration. To conclude this ring parallel, it should be noted that Papke was a great battler himself and just the . type to bring out Ketchel's great ness.
