April 13 A sen sational burrUrly occurred early Friday morning in Monmouth when a group of six men entered the Associated and United Purity store at corner of West Main and North Monmouth avenue at 1:30 o'clock and stole a quantity ot groceries and tobacco. They broke in at the rear door, departing in a Hudson coach toward Indepen dence were immediately followed by Verd Schrunk. city marshal, who by some sixth sense became aware of their degradation. Endeavoring to ditch the officer,-they ran down a lateral street and got stuck. Schrunk single-handed, took charge ot the . situation, helped them to extri cate their car, and then ordered them to proceed back to the busi ness section. He summoned traf fic officer, W. J. Mulkey, and a search ot the strangers' car dis closed two loaded revolvers and an unloaded rifle, and plenty of cartridges, in addition to the looted ' goods from the Associa ted store, which consisted of 21 cartons of cigarettes, several hams, cheese, candy and other incidentals, totaling about $60 worth of plunder. A quantity of other articles found in the car are believed to have been stolen elsewhere. Sheriff T. B. Hooker and dep uty sheriff. Scoter, came from Dallas and ushered the sextet to the Polk county Jail. After a hear ing they were each given 30 days, and their records will be Investi gated.
