STORES PRESENTED Rotarians Hear High School Students Argue Merits V Of Retail Systems Rotary club members were at tentive listeners Wednesday at a debate put on by a high school; team on the chain store question. Harold Prultt upheld the affirm ative of the proposition that chain stores are a detriment to the public interest while Ward Horn combatted the proposition. Each speaker had ten minutes for opening speech and a four-minute rebuttal; and each used his time, effectively. - Pruitt denounced chains, de claring that they idid 'not contrib ute their share to! support of com munity enterprises, while the lo cal Independent stores were loy al to ' these causes; that the ( chains lowered the standard of wages; and that they destroyed Individual initiative, t Horn based his defense of the Chains on the ground- that they ' saved consumers money through .' Increased operating efficiency. He defended chains on the score of wages by pointing at the low wages paid in the leading inde pendent store of the state tne governors own". He brsnded a lot of the subscription lists pass ed among the merchants as a racket which the chainj did right In refusing to support.
