So far as ascertained The Ore
gon Statesman has the honor of
carrying the name . "SilTerton"
for the first time in print, in the
Statesman issued on September! 1,
1855, Silverton was mentioned in
a notice to the taxpayers of Mar
ion county. I N
SUTerton'g history as "Silrer
ton It Is said, dates back f to
1854. j Prior to that the locality
was known as MUford. which 'was
really at the present sight of 'the
power plant above Silverton then
as Silver Creek. R. C. Clark, his
torian, j says that "the I postoffice
department in 1851, called for
proposals for carrying the mail to
Silver Creek from Harrison
Wright's. (Molalla)." -
Waite and Holland put up the
first building in what is now Sil
verton. That was In 1853. The
same year Smith . and Barger
erected a. flour mill. In 1855, Al
Coolidge moved his store from
MHford to Silverton. The Sllver
ton postoffice was established in
1855 with Charles Miller as the
Today Silverton's population Is
2.462. There are 14 groceries,
three drugstores, two hardwares,
six clothing and drygoods stores.

proud of her city park, the "Cool
idge and McClaine" park, which
from pioneer days has drawn
large crowds throughout-; the

Along in the '80's the Salvation
Army "struck town" as the news
report of the day gave it. In Jan
uary. 1887, the S. A. gave a "so
ciable" to raise money for the
maintenance of barracks in Salem,
and The Statesman announced the
event thus: iff.
"The people of Salem may think
they have attended sociables but
they haven't, as they will find out
after Monday night. No disreput
able persons will be present. Mem
bers of the legislature will be al
lowed admittance upon presenta
tion of certificate of good moral

Lists of 18661
A feature of the annual edition
of The Statesman in 1887 was a
list of the burials in the various
cemeteries during the year, the age
of the interred persons and the
cause of their death.
The run of diseases was similar
to those of today although cancer
was seldom mentioned in the list
of causes of death during 1886.?
Here are some of the reasons for
death given in the "87 files:
Creeping paralysis, membranous
croup, diphtheria, " old age, heart
disease, inflamation of the bowels,
congestion of the brain, consump
tion, typhoid fever, dropsy.

will appear at the opera house in
Salem tomorrow night with:; a
strong company, in The Wages of
Sin.' Miss Payn is known to Sa
lem people as an actress of great
